RR engines ARE run by electricity............since the end of steam locomotives.......... power generated by an onboard stationary diesel engine............just like WWI and WWII submarines.........DIESEL BOATS.
There was, for a brief period of time, an era of transportation in Port Byron and Weedsport that will never […]

Electric power generating stations, were built all along the Inter-urban Trolley lines, in all the lower 48 states and in the cities. Alabama to NY, to Maine to California...late 1800's to 1930 stuff.
THEY BURNED COAL OR OIL OR WOOD TO GENERATE THE ELECTRICITY.
Some old brick structures are still seen here and there.
The trolley could not carry large loads, due to the limits of the 3rd rail supplying the juice...back in the day, cows horses, kids, and deer etc were killed by the third rail, all the time. NYC subways have a third rail today.
Large loads of coal or grain would overtax the power system..same as today.
Power cannot come from the solar or wind..too weak.
Trains are the most efficient method of transportation, as are huge diesel powered ships.
Anything, having a nuclear reactor on board, to power it by steam driven generators, or direct drive steam turbines, like Aircraft Carriers and the Titanic, would need more staff and infrastructure on a nuke powered train, than passengers and freight. I am sure a train derailment would be catastrophic.
