True but we’re old farts. They actually taught survival skills back when we were in scouting. Now they teach arts and crafts and needlepoint.Self-experiment in snow and ice - Overnight
PHHTT, did that as a kid in Boy Scouts but we wore clothes. Hay and straw are GREAT insulators.
Went on a boy scout "freeze-o-ree" when my son's were in scouting. Saturday mid morning it had warmed up to 8°. Don't think it made 20 that day. They cancelled Saturday night as it was going to be -20°.-5C is +/-40F, right?
ETA, sorry got signs mixed up it's about 23F

Yeah, it was a bit of an exaggeration, but not that far off. When my son was old enough to join scouting I volunteered to be Scout Master since the current one was moving. Incidentally it was the very same scouting pack that I went through as a lad ! I had to basically reintroduced a lot of the things that scouts actually were supposed to be doing. Most of the then leaders were being lazy and doing just the bare minimum with the boys. One example. The end of the year camping trip was to an amusement park and not camping at all. I put an end to that shit and Booked primitive camping trips in the Adirondacks to actually teach primitive camping skills and woodsman ship. I wasn’t well liked for the first couple of years , but I reminded any and all leaders who complained that it was voluntary. If they didn’t like it, they didn’t Have to participate. Most came around eventually and their boys were better young men for it.I was actively involved with local troop as ASM while my son was in scouts. We (our troop) taught archery/rifle shooting and went on monthly overnights year-round. Haven't seen arts, crafts or needlepoint but suppose it depends on troop.
Yeah, we did a few "Feeze-o-rees" when weather was in single digits both in tents and cabins.
