generally, howitzer shells are straight walled. Tank main gun shells, both 105mm and 120mm are of the bottleneck type.

It was 2011. March 14th to be exact. 2nd Battalion 10th Marines was participating in the annual 10th Marine Regiment field exercise named Rolling Thunder. All three firing batteries had been engaging targets radioed in by my forward observers throughout the morning and it was finally time to execute a series.
A series is a schedule of fires planned and disseminated to the battalion's Fire Direction Control (FDC) and the individual batteries that includes targets, requested shell/fuze combination, firing elements, and timings.
The series is approved by me in the Fire Support Coordination Center and the different firing elements now wait to begin firing their portion of the fire plan. The time on target (TOT) arrives and the first volley is let loose. Good impacts on target.
As we wait for the impacts from the second volley of three, I hear 2/10 come over the Ft. Bragg range control net and request check fire.
"What are they doing?," I said aloud.
Range control was wondering the same and requested the nature of the "check fire," a command that is only used if there is an issue.
"Standby" was 2/10's response.
Range control was not going to accept that. "If there's been a firing incident we need to know 2/10," said the now slightly agitated range control officer.
"Standby" was 2/10's response.
The now clearly agitated range control officer said again, "2/10, I need to know what is happening and the nature of the check fire."
The radio crackled and a strained but calm voice comes over the net, "there's been an explosion in the pos...."
