12g ammo for home defense recommendation?

I have handguns throughout the house in case of an invasion of my home. I have two AR's that I can get to easily as well.

Under my bed, I have a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 00 buck. I am a firm believer in a variety of guns.

Having a variety is important.
I believe in rifles and shotguns for HD. And...Not all in the same location.

A shotgun is one tool of choice, of many.

A shotgun is a very powerful short range weapon. A 12 ga. has a bore of about .727", so a slug would be a lot larger in diameter than a rifle. It can fire 9 .33 cal projectiles/shot, so five shots in under 3 seconds would be 45 projectiles, pretty good rate of fire. Cleared a lot of trenches in a few wars.

Some ppl use what they have. Some ppl don't want to go to the expense and hassle of a pistol permit to obtain a handgun, but a shotgun is usually easily obtained, and a very flexible tool. You can load it to minimize over penetration specific to your circumstances.

You don't have to be an expert marksman to use one.

My personal goal isn't as tight a pattern as possible, because I'm not worried about stray pellet over penetration, for those pellets that might miss the target In suburban or urban areas. That may be a concern for some.

A handguns great away from home, because it's convenient to carry, and it's better than nothing. Most handgun cartridges are pipsqueaks compared to rifles and shotguns, but all 3 have a place and time. All 3 have advantages and disadvantages.

100% correct. I train heavy with my handguns. I play more with the AR's and the shotguns. I am good with all, but I am great with a pistol. That will always be my go to gun.

Speaking for myself, I do not believe in variety. I like uniformity when it comes to personal defense. That way even when I’m half asleep and drunk or injured with my vision tunneled, I do not have to think of what I’m doing. My body just reacts with the instrument in my hand like it’s a part of my body. A Glock and an AR feels like what I was born with. I know where all the controls are. I can reload it and fire it instinctively.

My point was someone jumps out at you 6' away, you're gonna point and shoot. It's instinct, and a natural time saver.

If someone's kissing close, then of course there's other remedies.

I have used an M4 at very, very, very close distance. Less than a foot if I had to guess.

Now if we are talking about contact shooting then yes a handgun will be easier to do that but if you are in that situation and hands on in a HD situation you are already in for a bad time and hopefully you are practicing jujitsu

I've never bothered with the Win "military grade". Always figured it was packaging hype, with bare bones unplated, unbuffered shot with no shot cup. You pretty much confirmed my suspicions.

I don't mind unplated, but buffering and a shot cup helps a lot.

I keep waiting for Winchester to come out with "Shot-Lok" buckshot, using copper-plated shot, like they have for turkey, pheasant and varmint loads. That would likely be a pattern for sore eyes. Maybe TOO tight for home defense distances.

Sad thing is... I see that Olin box for $4.99 to $5.99.
FFC is $5.99 to $7.99.
Not much of a price difference.
The Hornady CDV is usually $12.99 to $15.99 but it's for 10 rounds, not 5.
Id rather spend the extra dollar.
