12ga slug reload advice?

I just purchase a Lee Loadall 12ga press.

What wads are best for slugs? I saw a YT video where the guy says Federal 12S3 wads were the best but I could only find:

Claybuster Shotshell Wads 12 Gauge CB2118-12 (Replaces 12S3) 1-1/8 oz​

Will this suffice? For now I'll be buying new shells but eventually I'll be picking up my own and ones from the range others left behind.

The guy also suggested to have some 20ga fiber wads on hand to increase the height of the slug in the event they sit too low, and that it would help with accuracy.

Is this all I need not accounting for powder, shells, primers and the actual slugs?

As for powder, is Hodgdon TiteWAD the best powder?

Also, with slugs like below, do they just go on top of the WAD?



1. Deprime/resize
2. Prime
3. Powder drop
4. WAD and slug
5. Crimp (with fold facing you)
6. Cap (with fold facing you)

Of course using the correct spot on the press depending if it's 6 or 8 pointed crimp/cap.

Is it really that easy?

Reloading for shotgun is a whole different ball of wax than metallic cartridges. There's no real wiggle room, like there is with rifle and pistol cases.
I'd suggest you get this before anything else: Slug Loading Manual, 9th edition
You will need to pick a recipe and follow it to the "T". There are lots of combinations that use the same slug, primer, and powder, but the charge needed for one type of shell vr the charge needed for a different shell can be startling.

paper at the base of the hull around the primer .. vs all plastic ..

usa hull vs EU halls

AA, Gun Club , STS ..

i have a shit ton of RIO hulls i load in

and Fiocchi hulls ..

i like the clear hull

I'm gonna be getting:

Cheddite 2 3/4 16mm hulls
Red Dot powder
Claybuster FED12S3 wads
20ga Nitro cards (to put between the wad and slug)

Gonna use 1oz Lee key drive slugs. I'll be casting them when I'm at my place in PA since I can do it right in my driveway so I won't have to worry about ventilation.

The primers I'm not sure what brand yet until I pick them up from Thomas.

I plan on roll crimping.

As for the reloading book I picked up the Lyman Shotshell reloading handbook 5th edition.

My wads may change depending on what the formulary in the book calls for. I only plan on loading slugs.

The one of the YT video I watched that @Acer-m14 posted up showed almost the exact recipe but with Blue Dot powder.

this is basically what i got .. just in better condition .. the screws on my Vitts boos are not rusted like in this video

and the cup is not brittle ..

on the top of the box it does say Vitt aerodynamics slug

i think Rex Loaded them hot ... LOL ..

i think the ark port FFL had longshot on the powder board so will go back and check ..

may cost me 80 bucks for a pound lol

22-24 grs of Green Dot. Just was looking at the original paperwork that accompanied these slugs. The fastest powder used was 22 of Red Dot. If you Herco, Blue Dot, or Unique, that would be better.

575 grains they weigh in at .

Yeah, I noticed the same thing.

slugs can be compared to a birdshot load .. its the weight ..

1oz slug is the same as 1oz of birdshot ..

then you just need to work out the wad column height

Vitts Boos slugs

From my reading and understanding, Red Dot is for shot loads but this guy seemed to make it work for slugs. He also tested out various different wads.

I picked up some stuff from @Thomas today, Red Dot and CB1118-12 wads that are for 1 1/8 oz loads. I was thinking about loading the same amount of Red Dot the guy is using in the video but with these wads and Cheddite 209 primers.

I'll definitely need to use either cork or thicker nitro board to raise the height of the slug since this wad accomodates 1 1/8 oz loads.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

yes .. like i said before .. lead is lead .. powder load for the weight load

different wads to work out the wad column height ... and that is also in the weight of your pay load

them slugs i got .. lead and parts and the screw weigh in at 1.315 oz ...



you can even use longshot .. just have to figure out the powder load ..

Rex was a little hot in that vid .. but the gun didn't blow up ..

if my powder load is low and i drop in my slug and wad and its only 2 inches tall .. im not getting a 2 3/4 shell ..

back to the drawing board or you can make a 2 1/2 size shell ..

all i have is Green-dot .. so my 24 gr load on the slug will give me trap load FPS .. say 1200 fps .. and a safe chamber pressure ..

now switching to a different powder .. you can get 1600 FPS and still have the safe chamber pressure ..

i have a shit ton of fired birdshot RIO and some Fiocchi clear straight hulls .. the crimp will need to be trimmed off from what i'm learning too ..

so it will be a 2 1/2 inch slug if i go that way ..

i'll have to see how tall my green dot powder is and go from there

if you can find some 3 inch fired birdshot hulls then the trim of the crimp will put them at 2 3/4

Got my Inline Fabrication mounting plate for my Lee Load All II.

Just need to order a few more things to start loading shells - roll crimper, 1oz slug mold, lead ingots, and smelter pot.

i may be going Stinky .. Black powder Slug loads or BP Substitute

i got a can of Goex FFg and 2 lbs of pyrodex RS

been down this rabbit hole before ..

a Dram is a Dram .. 27.5 on the BP Brass Powder measure

27.5 x 3.75 .. 103.125 .. pretty close to what i load my 50cal musket to with a

350gr slug and its a lot tighter fit

ever see 3 Drams on the shot shell hull .. that is the BP load ..

just need to figure out how much drams of powder will fit into the hull of a shotgun hull

for a 1.315oz payload .. LOL

i may need 3 in mag hulls for this stink fest
