I met with Tom Vanhoose this morning after 20 armed IRS agents raided his store in Great Falls earlier this week. Tom informed me that these agents confiscated all the 4473 forms, none of which contain any financial information; instead, the IRS now has access to these forms with sensitive personal details of every customer who purchased a firearm from Highwood Creek Outfitters.

Great Falls gun shop re-opens after a visit from federal agents

...“At 7:30, I came in and they pulled in behind me with 20 heavily armed agents,” said Tom Van Hoose, the owner of Highwood Creek Outfitters.

Van Hoose says for two years his Highwood Creek Outfitters gun shop has been the subject of surveillance by state and federal agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, the Department of Homeland Security, the State of Montana and now the Internal Revenue Service.

“The fact that they think we make so much money as a gun business that they had to come investigate all the thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions of dollars whatever it is we supposedly absconded with, anybody that knows the margins in the gun business knows they’re not that high,” said Van Hoose.

Van Hoose says all he was told is that his business had been reported. He doesn’t know by whom, or the reason. He thinks it’s part of a nationwide pattern and feels it’s political.

“I can only assume that it’s because of the style of weapons that we have and the press that’s so against them,” said Van Hoose. “The current administration seems to be hell bent on getting those guns out of the hands of average Americans.”

Or just move to a State where there are plenty of LGS and 2A friendly businesses that would negate the acronym agencies attempt to diminish citizens access to such!

The nefarious association of the IRS obtaining access to firearm records not held by the govt (technically) is problematic! Is it so they can be prepared when raiding for revenue issues to know who has what? And with the Govt buying Google data and more lately, they know more than they need in any event.

Anyways, let me ask this? Because I'm not in the business, do you have to store those records on site at the business location? I know they have to be compiled and stored by law, but is it required to be on site for unannounced inspection? Because if not, I would have a safe deposit box and any visit like that would inform the acronym agencies I'll meet them on the next business day with my legal representation present to produce any information required. I might be pissing in the wind here, again, because I'm completely naive to it. And hey, I do remember reading that when the 4473 was instituted, it was noted that the information was not intended to be stored for Govt use, but only under specific narrowly defined reasons.

Anyways... Just thoughts here. Crazy shit really! This administration totally sucks and is off the freakin rails!

I wondered the same exact thing.

If I was a gun store/FFL, I wouldn't keep those records on site for a variety of reasons (fire, storms, robbery, etc). Heck, look at what happened to the Firing Pin with that fire a few months ago... the whole place could've burned down and the 4473 records could've been lost.

However, I would likely expect the acronym agencies would demand that you bring them to the location of said stored records, meaning they would follow you to said safe deposit box for instance.

Yeah, crazy shit!!

The IRS cannot possibly compute gross business income, thru the 4473's, as doubtlessly, he also sells plenty of his wares thru OTHER RECEIVING FFL HOLDERS, and would not have those hundreds of 4473's, ever. He claims to be the biggest internet seller of firearms.
He likely issues no or few 1099's either, to people who sell guns to him.

This is an illegal push to digitize his records ....................

Yes that would be a terrible shame if all of a gun stores 4473 records would happen to be burnt up in a fire so as the government would not have access to that information whatsoever. Yes a terrible shame. In fact I would advise against storing such records in cardboard boxes surrounded by dirty oil soaked rags right next to the shop heater.

do they have the right to even take them .. and even the ATF .. ??

never seen a report of ATF taking all the 4473's from a inspection .. they just need to look them over .. at the FFL ..

This. 1000% this. Every day we put up with this, we make a compromise. We may not always want to continue the compromise. For now, the compromise has enough benefits. That may not always be the case.

A quick read through and I see that it was also ATF along with the criminal investigation unit of the IRS. That group has always been armed and they train annually as well. Some how that narrative got change to 20 heavily armed IRS agents. :ROFL:

As for the financial books and files collected along with the 4473 forms, my guess would be to confirm firearm purchase transactions of sale. It's likely political but covered in legitimate actions of both agencies. If you think about it from a record book keeping perspective, every entry of a firearm sale should have a corresponding 4473 on file.

We can argue all day about how the government shouldn't have any info on those sales but it is a matter of law now. Passed by both parties a long time ago.
