First three of the season. My favorite squirreling spot was put under the management of a private land preserve that doesn't allow small game hunting. So, I've spent much of the last two weeks scouting new locations. Today, I returned to an old standby location that I've avoided because of campers. Luckily, the squirrels came out to play.

Minimags are the best squirreling ammo. They never crawl off or require a second shot.

But.....squirrels are the ONE animal my GF refuses to eat.

Sadly, I had to toss these ones out. Each of them has several insect bites. The mosquitos down there are pretty bad. I wonder if squirrels can get West Nile virus.

Properly handled and prepared horse is a very good meal. Would not be something I would go out of my way for on a number of levels, and I felt conflicted throughout, but the opportunity presented on a trip.

Eh, I don't blame her. Anything rodent is probably something I wouldn't want to eat either. Question though, why is bug bites on a squirrel a toss em situation but bug bits on a deer isn't? Size of the animal?

These three are right on top of my blind... on September 21, naturally. I fully expect them to disappear for the season the night before I take off for Fall turkey.

The one on the right is smaller but has probably 8" beard.

I totally forgot about early bear season. Do you like bear meat. I’ve never tried it. I might take a stab at hunting best one of these days. If only just to teach the bears that people aren’t a safe source of food.

wow, what a buck, that's the shit that keeps me in the woods year after year happily freezing my ass off.

I went turkey hunting but saw no turkeys. I went to my parents place. I went to my normal spot on top of a mountain with a field and multiple creeks around for water and protection. I got to the top of the hill and saw the guy was building a garage and had been cutting firewood up there recently. Thought shit I’m screwed. Heard nothing and saw no signs so I switched to small game hunting pretty quickly. Shot a red, black, and grey squirrel. Then I went fishing some more. They are near the open all year Genesee river fishing and caught 5 trout Friday and 5 trout Saturday. I also kissed off a red squirrel Friday night and heard something in the woods. Then I thought damn that sounds like it’s moving towards me. I pivot to look and it was a coyote coming in. Cool to see but a bad sign. I also heard a bunch of coyotes in the morning assembling to go after the rooster in the valley.

I can’t wait. I have a 6.8 SPC dinner for them. I’ll pick up an electronic call. It was amazing to see that thing come in that fast to that squirrel distress call.

That what I was using.
2 years ago I had 5 coming into me calling back. 45 birds flew down out of 3 trees. I never seen so many turkeys in my life. Less than 3 hours I was down turkey hunting it only took that long because a car drove by and scared my birds away. Last year zero and this year zero.

Mouth calls for the yotes I find they often work better then the electric ones.
