So I'm starting to think about putting in some beds but haven't had a chance to really do much yet. What're youse guys thoughts on setting up raised or elevated beds on slightly uneven terrain? The spot I have picked out has a bit of a slope to it but I'm having a hard time figuring out a better place in the yard to put it; I'd say it's maybe a foot higher at the top of the hill than the bottom and a bit uneven throughout. I doubt I can grade it or fill it.
I'm looking at a space about 45' x 35', fwiw.
Oh and I got my second aronia, strawberry, blueberries, and black currants from Stark. Very happy with the plants they are in great shape and doing well in the kitchen "greenhouse."

This thread inspired me to start a small garden. I built a small raised bed last weekend.
Bed is 6’x 4’ the 6’ side panels are removable so I don’t have to reach over the fence. I haven’t had a chance to build the other shorter fence.

The Mrs. and I take care of her 91yr. old mother who is still very Spry and lives In her own home. I do the handy man stuff and clean up the yard when needed. I was cleaning up some tree limb debris out back when I smelled a very strong odor of mint. I carefully kicked around in the brush and discovered some Very fragrant short leafed mint growing, so I dug it up and brought it home.

I planted it in a big planter tub. This stuff is Very evasive and will quickly take over a raised bed if planted and left to grow on its own. I ate a couple of the leaves and this stuff Is really Tasty.

Hahaaa screw you squirrels, you missed one. Green bean test in a window planter. If I play it fast and loose with the spacing I can get three in there. Only about 7" deep. We shall see.

@S&W Fan that looks great, we love mint over here but havent started any yet. On a related foraging note, anyone here ever try garlic mustard? Its prolific around the periphery of our woods I was thinking of harvesting some soon.

I think you’d be fine to do that. You’ll basically have to step the bed. So I’d dig down to take the unevenness out of where the board will go so they lay flat. Then sink in a 4”x4” post a feet feet into the ground at 4’ intervals and lay posts in a T notched on the high spot so that the front wall is tied into the soil so it doesn’t get pushed out. Then landscaping fabric that is stainable not plastic so the soil doesn’t go out from between the cracks. A picture would help.

Thanks @Saltwater60, makes sense to me. I am thinking of maybe using cinderblocks but I guess same concept.

If you go that high with cinder blocks in general they will tip over. You also don’t have to build it level though. You could always go 1-2 high in the back and just have that follow all the way through. Cinder blocks don’t hold up very well to the freeze thaw and crack easily IMO.

Thanks, I appreciate the insight- I was thinking they'd hold up better than wood but that makes a lot of sense.
Edit: the main thing that had me thinking about them is I could more easily do a not level box with them vs. wood. Maybe, maybe not?

You’ll want to pick a spot with the absolute most amount of Full sun as possible.

I did some research recently and found out that Yellawood pressure treated wood is perfectly safe to use for raised garden boxes. Check it out Here. Pressure treated lumber trusted for 50 years

I'm thinking about taking out the two trees in the right side of the second picture.
Living in the woods is awesome except for stuff like this. There is a perfect spot to do this right by the house - flat, level, full sunshine pretty much all day -but it's some of the only nice lawn I have - first world problems abound.

While my yard is pretty wide open it's far from level/uniform. Spent the last couple days leveling each raised bed/box individually. They are arranged as per the plan but they are not all on the same level as the yard slopes west to east. Let them be on different levels. Could look cool as part of terrain.

Thats' the route I'd like to go but I wonder what chemicals come off the pressure treated lumber that get leeched up by the plant roots.

There are as many opinions out there as you can imagine re: leaching. Based on what I’ve read I’m comfortable that any leaching will be virtually imperceptible and not a problem.
