Conditions here suck. Windy, swirling pretty bad, lifting my blind, and snow so bad the visibility sucks. Hoping it calms down and they visit the field of lush green grass for an evening snack.

I’m trying. I’ve had to hold down my blind with my hand and shotgun more than once. The door side has collapse 6-7 times now and three stakes pulled out once. I think I’ll stick it out the last 90 minutes.

Critters will come out during light weather. But, more severe weather will keep them bedded down. I’ve noticed that squirrel will stay denned up in high winds because it’s harder to hear predators.
I got the meat back from my baby buck. The yield was a little lower than average because I damaged some meat from the high hit. Such things have a greater relative impact on smaller animals.
Hopefully, I can fill at least one more tag. I promised myself myself that I would take out the Hawken, if I bagged a deer with the CVA Optima. I was having problems with horizontal stringing from the rear blade sight. My eyes are pretty bad, it seems. I replaced the factory sight with a skinner barrel sight. The only trouble is that the skinner had an American 3/8 inch dovetail and the Spanish made barrel on the Hawken has a 8.5mm dovetail. I ended up having to file more than a millimeter off the skinner dovetail. But, it now fits great and I sighted it in on Wednesday.

Very nice deer. Out of curiosity, what round did you use and where did you hit it? I've never seen a wound like that. Is that coagulated or bubbling lung blood in the picture?

7-08 , 140 grain Winchester extreme points. I haven't ranged the shot yet but I'm guessing 150 -200 yards. I was hunting out of a 20' high ladder stand (not mine) on a ridge and the deer was another 20-30' below that ground grade. I missed on the first shot so i was thinking I hit low, racked another and aimed a bit higher. The entrance hole is very high where you see the neon blood bubbles, after wrecking part of his tenderloin the round cut his lung in half on the exit side. That ball of blood sure made him easy to find. It still bugs me as to where the first round went, high or low, I don't know. It was my first time ever shooting at an angle so steep.

at 2800fps per the book .,. i did chrono the load and its right in the 2800 ball park .. deer only took 3 steps and went to bed ..
the deer i took .. the shot was aimed from a quartering away .. i was placing it from his ass end to out the right front shoulder ..
he turned just as the trigger broke .. the shot went up the left side .. smashed out some ribs .. skipped a few ribs .. then smashed out a few more ribs
and ended up in the left front shoulder .. .. only took 3 steps and went to sleep ..

The 140 grain Hornady Interlock I used did well. It was a double-lung shot on a textbook broadside. At ~70 yards, it put big holes in the ribs, turned the lungs to jelly, left a large exit on the hide, and the blood-trail was thick from the impact to where the buck laid down. I used 45.0 grains of IMR4064 for low recoil at 2711 fps. I wanted to see if a round I could use for range sessions out to 300 yards could also be a good hunting load, and it looks good.

It might be better. Down here the wind is blowing like a $2 hooker. I’m hoping the wind settles down and the afternoon is better. One of my good friends is in Columbia hunting and I’ll get venison if he gets one. Best of luck.

Thanks. It’s much calmer here now, but still fairly windy as well.
Im bringing some hot tea today. I’ll get there about 11-12 and stay until dark. I’m taking tomorrow off of hunting.

Throwing away my hide and two others today. The local trap store wont take them. The prices are in the toilet and with the higher salt prices for tanning its not worth his time.

7mm-08 is not hard to get along with. Plenty of punch and reasonable recoil for the power.
I use Hornady American Whitetail with the 139 gr. SP in my Ruger American.
I shot a mature doe facing me once, center chest. Bullet exited just in front of right rear hip. For all I know it's still going.

I was thinking seriously about the 7mm-08 American last year. But, the ammo situation makes it difficult to adopt a new caliber.
Also, I feel like my 308 can handle anything too big for my 243 for hunting. My 6.5 CM and PRC have the long range target thing covered.
Still, it’s not like you need a reason to buy a new rifle. But, lack of ammo and primers make expanding difficult.

No deer yet, but just heard a few shots not to far away and something just scared 4-5 turkeys in the woods into the trees around me. One was 40-50’ away and could have easily taken it. A few hawks, nuthatches, a cedar wax wing and a bunch of woodpeckers. Woods finally got quiet. A gay was splitting wood and another riding a wheeler and another cutting down trees. I’m not super hopeful after all that going on in the last hour or so. Not too much time to recover from that.
