2023 Deer season

Between the two I scared away as I was walking in at 5:15 this morning, the three I saw traipsing through too far to shoot, and the buck that just wouldn’t give me a good shot before something spooked it, I’ve seen more deer back here than ever in one day, but I got nothin. Not bad for half of day one tho

I still dont consider it opening day til monday. Thats the way it was all my life and since there are only 3 of us left in my hunting crew and we basically only hunt because its a tradition, we stick with the tradition. It would have to be a once of a lifetime 15 pointer for me to want to carry that horse back to the car.

Heard 3-4 shots very near me in the course of 45 minutes this morning. Saw nothing in the morning or afternoon but a really nice day for sure.

Saw a lone baby this morning and passed. One buddy took a 9pt buck another took a nice big doe. Good start to the weekend.

I ended up twisting my knee Friday night but hunted Saturday morning, saw nothing! Not even a damn Gray squirrel! Called it quits about 11:00 because my knee was hurting so bad and just couldn't get comfortable in the stand. Oh well, season ain't over yet!

Saw zero deer yesterday. I did however watch a weird coyote/dog hybrid quickly slink in from the right hit the exact path that I walked in on and stop dead and do a 180 the other way as fast as he came in. Incredible. Just amazing how sensitive their sense of smell is.

Dropped this small 8 point opening day Am @ 315 yards with the Blaser R8 in 300 WSM.
Had bigger bucks on camera, but I've been bitten in the behind with letting bucks pass in hopes of bigger bucks appearing.
The freezer was empty, so down it went.

Avid hunter celebrates her birthday in style​

LIVINGSTON MANOR – of Livingston Manor is an avid hunter with crossbow and rifle.

Thanksgiving, Thursday, she celebrated her birthday out in the family forest and she is providing members with enough venison to feed them for an entire year.

Will is not the only member of her family who enjoys the sport and also filling up the freezer.
Her dad, and other relatives also spend time at the family hunting camp, enjoying the camaraderie, and her mom, cooking a holiday meal.

Got back yesterday from 3 days in Franklinville. Apparently, the DEC airlifted ALL the deer out of that area. Didn't see one damn deer. Didn't even THINK I saw a deer. Didn't see much of any other wildlife to mention either. Pretty much a hugantic, ginormic waste of time.

Got back yesterday from 3 days in Franklinville. Apparently, the DEC airlifted ALL the deer out of that area. Didn't see one damn deer. Didn't even THINK I saw a deer. Didn't see much of any other wildlife to mention either. Pretty much a hugantic, ginormic waste of time.

True. I don't mind the quiet time but I'd rather have missed opportunities than nothing at all.

I hope to get a couple of chances to take my muzzleloader out to get my first deer with it. I only took it afield once in the 2½ years I've had it. I used to shoot hardcast 255 gr .45 SWCs in a .50 cal sabot over 80 gr of fffg Triple Se7en. Accuracy was good, but I'd get bad fliers every so often.
So I tried out a 0.490 ball with a 0.015" lubed patch and played with different loads. I found consistent and accurate loads at ~50 grains volume (35 gr weight) and ~60 grains volume (45 gr weight).

I got some practice in today at 50 yards and am pretty happy with my group while standing using iron sights. Now just gotta go see some deer.

I saw one coyote, that's it. As soon as he crossed the trail I walked in on, he bolted. Didn't even have time to line up a shot.
