I will likely make something similar but I’ll probably mix some veggies or blueberry bushes in them with some annuals. Or my go to of hydrangeas. I must have 10-15 hydrangeas.

I used treated wood for the main frame. Not sure how you feel about that for veggies. Maybe ues composit? My banana are ornamental so I don’t really care. Honestly I wouldn’t really worry about the new PT lumber anyway but some might. The trim is oak and hickory with 3 coating of toung oil

For the amount I would use I would just get cedar. I like it better anyway. It smells better, is lighter, easier to cut, and not wet. All the pressure treated by me is always soaking wet and super heavy. The pressure treated is warped to shit too.
I built a raised bed for my mother in law for her birthday and we used cedar. It’s 2’x8’x12”H and a nice ledge around it for her to kneel on. It was $350 worth of wood though. Yikes!!

I looked at the cedar first it was 4x the cost of the treated.

I’m done making my soil and it looks great. I’m happy with it and I hope my plants are to. I also have started a garden log book so I can track what I’m doing to make adjustments. I think it will hold water well but not be soggy and have good nutrition. It will also be lose and airy.

Came home today to find my very nice and very expensive Japanese maple tree with half of it was broken off. I’m rather disappointed. I used some green tape and put it back together but it looked pretty dry so I don’t expect it to live, well half of it will be fine but it will look stupid because it’s the weeping type and half the weep is gone.

yeah .. cedar is expensive .. but is resistant to water and shit .. no chems needed to preserve it
and it smells good too ..

It was nice today so I cleaned up the yard, trimmed the peach tree, and got a few other things done. I ordered bought my seeds as well.
I also bought a grow light and I will start a few seeds indoors and I normally don’t. My garlic is popping up out of the ground probably an inch already but I’ve read it should be fine.
Im going to slowly start buying stuff to get my hydroponics system up and running by fall. I’m going to bring my tomato and pepper buckets indoors in the fall to see if I can keep them going.

Same here. Trimmed all three fruit trees , cleaned up the deadwood cane in the blackberry patch and started making a couple stone rings to support a new curved trellis to plant my wife a couple of vining Honeysuckles.
Garlic does well with the cold, I plant late Sept. It gets 5,6 in tall by fall, more than I can use every yr.

I’m surprised you plant it that early but that’s cool. I’m curious to know when you harvest it because I’d love to plant it then and harvest it earlier in spring to get it out of my way for spring veggie planting. Also what part of NYS do you live in?

Later into the week it’s supposed to be 55-60 around my parts and I’m hoping to get my boy out fishing but it’s supposed to be windy.
Worm composting is going good except I moved them to their new home and now they want to squirm away on me and get out of the new house. I’m also hoping my compost starts breaking down good and early that I added to my composter in the fall. The bin was pretty hot today with all the sun on the black composter.
My favorite koi was found dead today so I’m a bit pissed about that. They don’t do well outside with all this up and down temp swings. Beautiful white, black, silver, and orange one with long flowing beautiful butterfly fins. He was a small one born in my pond and two years old.
Strawberries look great with the mild winter.

i didn't get rich , but sold a bunch of seeds back then going door to door ..
i don't remember the prizes i got from back then ..
but i do remember hitting every house in town with a garden selling them .

Ok so about the same time as normal then. Damn I was hoping this would give me a jump to get it out of the way earlier but doesn’t appear it will. I’m thinking this year with the warm spring it might be an early harvest. This is my first year doing garlic and I also tossed in a bunch of shallots just to see what happens. I know they can be hit or miss with how cold it can get here but I wanted to try and it’s in a protected area close to my homes foundation. It could be the shallots coming up to but I do t know since I planted them alternating in a circle at the edge of my veggie garden.

@Drinkthekoolaid you can get them at most higher end nurseries. Or you can get seedlings off Etsy. They like well drained but moist soil. Lots of nitrogen. In winter just throw them in the basement. If their too big just cut the whole stalk off about 18” from the base and it’ll grow back or grow new “pups” I repot them in spring when they come back out with new soil. They add a super nice tropical accent and are pretty forgiving.

I just bought a cheap 9’x3’x3’ greenhouse to get some seeds going earlier this year and protect from frosts. It’s so warm here I figure I can till my garden this week since it will be in the 50-60’ this week after being mid 40’s all week. I just have to mix in the leaves and rabbit bedding I tossed on top over the winter and then I’ll sow some carrots, broccoli, and lettuce. It’s a couple bucks each seed packet so whatever. If it fails it’s a few bucks, if it succeeds I’ll get another rotation of fresh veggies. The plastic tears I’ll replace it, the plastic frame breaks I’ll remake it.
How long does it take to get fruit from them
Don't get too excited, still have to get through march

Oh I’ve never gotten fruit, I’m not even sure I’m growing fruiting varieties. They’re strictly ornamental for me. This will be my 4th year I’ve lost some and replaced them I’m up to 7 now. I think it would be tough to get fruit in NY ..

And honestly I’m not real focused on that maybe if I tried but at .59 a pound bananas are about the cheapest food you can buy..other than potatoes lol and I do know how to grow them haha

There are ornamental varieties and that’s what most people grow. I doubt yours would ever produce fruit if you did anything and everything possible to make the produce fruit.

I know. I’m just going to play around with a few cold weather varieties to see what happens. I don’t expect much and I will monitor the weather patterns to see what comes. I don’t plan on getting any seeds in the ground for another month as it is now. Carrots, lettuce, and broccoli seem to handle the cold very well and sprout when it’s cold. I have to check my varieties and see how warm the greenhouse will make the soil before going forward. All these seeds are planted 1/4” down so I think the soil will get warm enough for them to germinate and get a good head start but I’ve been wrong before. If I’m wrong it’s a $10 learning lesson.

I’m worried about my peaches. Last year they got froze out and I only had 2-3 peaches on the entire tree. Buds are swelling and I expect the same this year. Yuck. I hope I’ll get some apples this year if I can fend off the squirrels. I wonder if my grape vine will get frozen out too. Saturday will be 17 by me so I don't know.

Are the peach trees too big to cover? If it’s only one or two maybe try covering them idk I don’t grow fruit but might be worth a try

Two years ago my backyard looked like Halloween in late March. I had four fruit trees and three blueberry bushes that had budded out covered with heavy white sheets to fend off a hard frost. The ol’ lady wasn’t too happy about it either.

It’s rather large and would be difficult to cover. I may try it but the damn squirrels just end up getting most anyway. I’m no expert either and I’ll evaluate how it looks on for day but the issue is it’s supposed to be really windy here Saturday and it will still be cold. Who knows.
