No requirement to weld. Pinning it works just fine. Use a blind pin and be fine. You can always order one without threads McGowen barrels are around 265 bucks.SAFE act, unless you want felony charge for illegal assault weapon...
Lol you can't be serious.Pinning is the hard part, esp when you have a very thin wall to work with, welding is the easy part.
Go off center. Nothing says you have to drill at a 90* angle to the centerline of the bore. If you put the pin in the side of the barrel threads (kind of like the front sight base pins) instead of into the (90*) threads it is easier and still makes sure you cannot remove the muzzle device without destroying the threads.5/8-24 has a minor diameter of .574. The cap has a OD of .750 That means you have a wall of .088 If you want the job to look good, you need to cut the pin shorter than that so when you put a bead of weld on you can dress it back flush w/ the cap and still have a solid joint. Good luck. A .936 cap will have .181 wall, so you're looking at a pin that is about 1/8" in length, doable, but then you'll never get the gas block off or be able to change your handguard.
I've done my own pin and welds on 223 barrels w/ 750 caps. Making the pin is tedious (I cut one off of a drill bit shank), as is plunge cutting the hole w/ a mill, putting a bead of weld over top and dressing it down is by far the easiest part of the project.
