Just like Bob Said, G17 with an Advanced Arms 22LR top end. Let the gun get dirty and dry and it will be good for malfunction drills also .
I really think every ones first gun should be a Glock 17 , If you can master a Glock trigger you can shoot anything . The benefit of a 22 is it allows you to learn how to shoot with out all of the bad habits picked up from recoil , Most folks want to shoot a high caliber just to make them selfs feel tougher, Swapping out the top end is very simple.
I actually built a polymer 80 bottom to keep my 22 lr top end on it.
When my son started shooting we started him out with a Sig mosquito , he used to run through a box of 550 rounds in a range visit. after a year he said he wanted a 9MM and we moved him up to a G17 He is an excellent shot as he learned all of his fundamentals with out the bad habits created by recoil. Did the same with my daughter but she has never moved away from the 22 (she is petite Less then 100 lbs)
