I had a buddy who was in the market for a .22 at the same time I was. He also was looking at the Dick's deal and had the same issue of them being out of stock. Strange for a big box store. He settled for a 10/22. I ordered mine through a local table top FFL. I specifically wanted the bull barrel model. I think it came to $260ish give or take. The scope I bought through ebay. It's a UTG. was something like $90 but it seems plenty good for .22. As far as other accessories, I'm not sure. I know VQ makes a target hammer, but I'm not sure if that is a worth while upgrade. You could do a bipod and nice sling, change your stock if you don't like it, upgrade your scope if you aren't happy with it but the most important accessories, in my mind, would be extra mags and lots of ammo.

@ArmedCorgi lol I agree! Im surprised at the price of the scope, It looks way more expensive that. I will do some more research and put some more rounds in the 597 and see what improvements I can make.

I was thrown off by the magazine size! But did a little surfing and found others with that same floor plate/mag conversion, I've never seen that type of set up with a 40X before all were benchrest rigs! Learn something new every day!! Thanks for sharing.

The bolt is fully retracted, take a look at this video and you can see how forward in the mag the round is. I wish I could could claim ownership to any of these beauties, but none of them are mine. There's a thread over at Snipers Hide in the rimfire section that details the 40X conversion, "Ravage Rimfire 40X Repeater". Mike Bush has built an AICS style mag that feeds seamlessly when you convert a 40X to repeater with his template. He sells the mags direct, and sent his drawings to smiths for the conversions. There's a few guys around the country who're doing these 40X repeater conversions, check the thread for the names if you're interested.

Armed Corgi, I don't know the exact price, but do know it's fairly pricey. You're looking at a couple grand easily, it's Annie territory and then some, but the guys who've gotten their conversions are beyond smitten with the results. It does make for an ideal trainer and is cooler than any Annie IMO. Lots of guys with expensive rifle tastes, have found serious new love for the 40X repeater. Read the thread and you'll see what I'm talking about, it's pretty amazing how much fun guys have found shooting .22lr I've a couple other builds in the fire to get done, but one of these beauties is going to be next on the build list.

Yes that's the thread I found and I watched that video. Want I meant about the bolt not going all the way back is that 1/2 the bolt is visible in the ejection port opening, It obviously retracts as far as it needs to.

Actually got the 597 out to the range last night. Just did some rifle league style practice with league targets and I was very happy with how I did and how the rifle preformed. All the shooting was done offhand with the exception of a quick sight in, which I did casually off of my range bag. The targets were at 25 yards (I'll post pictures later).
Out of 100 rounds I had one failure to fire (good fireing pin strike and round fired when cycled through again), one failure to feed, resulting in a bent bullet and one instance where the bolt didn't strip a round from the mag. So really just the quirks of 22lr and two failures I would put on the magazine. Otherwise the rifle functioned beautifully. Like I said I'll post some pictures of the targets later.

I would also try to find yourself some Of the Federal ammo too.After several 1000 rounds I haven't had any issues with it.

I have some cci laying around and I have some federal bulk. I've typically had good reliability from Aguila. As promised here are pics of my targets.

CCI is also my first choice. Although I have been thinking about trying out some Aguila rounds.

@ArmedCorgi nice shooting, do you mind me asking what range you shoot at? My local range doesnt have 25 yards.
