3 gun weekend

I have talked to my Officers and they are game for a 3 gun type shoot.

So to pull this off I need a date and 2o people minimum ( prepaid).

It has been so long since I have done any action shooting I will need some help with layout of the event.

Give it some thought and let me know what you guys think. Take a look at our event schedule in the New Bremen Range event 2017 thread. We will need to plan around those dates.

How many rounds do you normally go through?
When I shot IPSC it was 150 rounds minimum. I really don't want to run that many pistol rounds per shooter because it will take a too long time to run 20+ people through.

Give me some ideas.

How many stages? How much?

Stage layout is the key to making it run smoothly.

My 3 gun events usually have minimum round vount of about 12 shot gun. 2 slugs. 15 pistol and 11 rifle. Per stage. If you make it challenging people will shot double that.

We can go out to 385 yards for rifle targets

You could but you probably won't be happy with your score.

Of course it could be set up for center fire play on one day and rimfire play the other. That might be fun.

The requirements remain the same, pistol, rifle and shotgun. If you don't bring enough gun or enough skill the scores will reflect it.

I have run IPSC matches where the parents asked me if their kids could shoot the course with their 22s. The only stipulation I had was that a parent follow thier little one through the course as an additional safety officer. My 8 year old had a blast shooting an IPSC match with the Ruger Standard. My club even started to list a Kinder Class in addition to the open and limited class.

If you want people to have any chance of hitting them you need to make them no smaller than 4MOA at 100 yards. I have an MGM self resetting target that stands 18 inches tall and is 4 inches wide at its fattest point, I called him skinny Sammies. The average person cannot hit them.

Six and eight MOA targets will make it fun for the average competitor.

The 350 yard plus target you have will probably remain mostly unhit.

I used to make really super competitive awesome matches, I got many complaints that they were too hard. Make it real easy.

22 lr will probably not activate the targets or knock them over (must fall to score) 100+ yard targets will never activate with a 22lr.

Loading a pump duck gun that holds minimal shells will take forever. Loading shotgun is very time consuming.

Centerfire magazine fed firearms. 12 gauge semi is best. Pumps are oaky. Long tubes make it faster.

Really would like to pick your brain a little more on the topic. .

Call me. Too much for an e mail.

Basic idea.

Start with 8 in SG. Have 7-8 targets.

Start witj 10 in pistol. Have a min of 21 (hits). 8 paper 5 KD.

Rifle: 6 paper (12 shots). 3 clay pigeons (25 yards) friction fit into cardboard ( if you want to be evil, you can put the clays into a new shoe target so when they missed the Clay they take a no shoot penalty. But that's pretty evil. That's what I do. ). 5 to 6 long range targets, (100 yards) you could have two shooting positions.

If you have the ability to shoot between 100 and 300 yards you could put eight or 10 targets out one shooting position.

Make sure you have a part-time. Otherwise it will be out there shooting all day. 180 seconds should be fine, if there's a lot of long range targets, maybe 240 seconds. No more than that.

I will have to do some sketches of the range and potential stage set up. What weekends are you not in a shoot or a show? If we do it right you could probably sell some of your stuff that weekend as well.

Will probably keep the shotgun stage round count to 8 or less just to keep it manageable for the average shooter's equipment. Will probably keep pistol stages down to 16-18 hits as well so revolvers guys can compete.

I am thinking that it will have to be in one of the three months below avoiding the weekends listed (scheduled club events)
June - Appleseed Shoot 3-4 June
July – Rifle Steel shoot – 8 July 40 round ( hit/miss scoring)
August – Rimfire Rifle Shoot 12 August 40 round (hit/miss scoring)

not sure why you cant use steel....BUT, here is another option :Newbold Targets

these targets are very affordable and are made from some kind of poly so the bullets pass through. we use a bunch of them. the 2" targets are great for rifle at 25 yards. hard as hell to hit ( i am evil like that. i call these targets "fuck you eddie " targets cause that is what people say as they shoot them!

we also used their plate rack set up. works great. EVERYONE claims that the bullets are passing through and the targets do not fall. THIS IS 120% WRONG. THEY DO NOT FALL CAUSE THEY ARE NOT HITTING THEM!

do not cater to the revolver guys......there will be NONE. (revolvers, pump guns that hold 4, and EOtech's over 100 yards [at 300 forget it], suck bad. those guys always bring the "right" gear next time.

i realize that with PRACTICE people can and do hit 3-4 MOA targets at 100 + with an EOtech and dots. MOST "regular" people do not practice this. it si hard. harder than irons. the BIGGEST issue is actually SEEING The targets. (something that helps is bright yellow backers. this was the targets show up easier. ) bottom line is dots require practice.

Well this started as a NY Guns weekend shoot and morphed into a 3 gun shoot. This is more of a fun shoot with an element of competition. One reason I didn't pursuit IPSC further than I did was the "asshole factor" the local matches became so competitive that people stopped being friendly.

I want the 3 gun match/ weekend to be fun and something worth repeating. If it gets to be too much of a pain in the ass the club would not want to host another one.

Oh, it's going to be a pain in the ass. At all levels. The club, helper is the set up, scoring, it's very aggravating. Just kidding you're not shooters to attend is a challenge.

I have action step down in the chairmanship of all the shooting sports events at my club I still lamb assistance, but I'm no longer heading it up.

Use practice score for scoring. There is no other way. Figure out how to get people to sign up online and pay. This will give you some idea on who is coming. the biggest challenge is knowing who is attending. It really sucks spending a couple days setting up only to have 5 people show up.

We have a really good amount of core three gun shooters in my area. There are three different clubs that run events. I still have trouble getting the attendance that I would like.

There is a fine line for not enough people or too many people to run multiple stages. You need a minimum of 11 or 12 people per stage to make it run successfully. Everyone is supposed to tape reset and score. But you'll find the current shooter the on deck shooter in our own a scorekeeper minimum aren't setting up. And then you add one or two people are loading their mags and out of 12 people only six are actually setting up and taping.

As you can see if you only have eight people per stage set up time increases dramatically in the match runs way way late.

These are very real things that happened to matches. I'm happy to give you plenty of insight on the pitfalls to watch for. I suggest you call me so I can give you an outline so you have a very good understanding. I think this will dramatically improve the success of your match.

Please do not let this anyway suggest that the match will not be awesome for the shooters. The shooters always have fun, it's the match director that has to survive the torturing.

Yeah I have been pretty lucky I guess my match director days was in an active area and I always had 40+ shooters show up. That made for a long day but it was fun. Most of our regular club events are run by 2-3 people. Which makes for a long painful day. My club officers have set a minimum requirement of 20 participants ( all prepaid) as a go/no go point. So depending upon the level of interest from the forum this all may be an Exercize in futility.

It sounds like a good time to me. I would consider making the drive out for the weekend but I'd need a little more info on what I'm signing up for.

I'm sure I'd be fine in the pistol and shotgun portions but do you have any idea on how the rifle stage will be conducted? It seems to me that NY's laws would make it difficult. Let me ask you this, what would an ideal rifle setup (gun, optic, etc.) be, in your opinion?

Either way thanks for trying to get something like this started. I wish there was more of it throughout the state.

It has not generated the interest required for the investment. My officers are good with it, and I have talked to some Soldiers up here that want to try it so it may happen later on in the year.

For pistol we are looking at 6-10 IPSC type targets 2-3 hits each depending upon the stage rules.

For shotgun looking at 5-6 targets per stage, 3 knockdown, three clay birds.

For rifle you would most likely be looking at shooting steel targets from 100-300 yards out probably no more than 6 targets (2 at each distance) A semi auto rifle with a scope would probably be best.

Par time and penalties, 5 stages. So figure 150 rounds of pistol, 15-18 rounds for shotgun, 30 rounds of rifle minimum.
