30-06, cheap ammo

Hello; my name is Dayten, I am 15, my grandpa is buying me a mossberg patriot with my money and I have come across to an issue with that beautiful gun, the caliber.. I want a 30-06 but the ammo is just so damn expensive! because this is a nanny state you can't buy it online, anyone know any cheap 30-06 ammo in any local stores or any store overall in the Syracuse/Onondaga area that are under 16$? under 18$ minimum. My grandpa said "I can buy the car but I wont have enough money for the gas." Thanks.

Walmart around here has Federal and Winchester 30-06 for $17, right in your price range.

Walmart is a good place to check, if one doesn't have what your looking for start calling others in the area and asking what they have for 30-06 ammo instock. Depending on how far your family is willing to drive I've gotten ammo at reasonable prices from herb philipsons.

And you CAN buy ammo online, however most online retailers will only ship to an FFL inside NY.

Look for the season deals from major retailers and read the fine print. Some require rebate to lure you into the store.
Why dont you go with a caliber that is easier to own and shoot yet will allow you to hunt with authority down the road? The 30-06 is not a pleasant cartrige to shoot from a mossberg patriot. They are light rifles and recoil force is pretty stout from this caliber.
In any case they sell chamber inserts for the 30.06 to shoot other cartriges for inexpensive practice like 7.62x39, 30 carbine, etc ...

Alternatively consider a rifle with a quick barrel swap system. Some barrels you can find in ebay dirt cheap in good condition.

Also reloading and this might be a great thing to do together with your grandpa. With less than 100 dollars in parts you could be ready to start collecting some brass and affordable bullets and learn the hobby asuming your parents and grandpa assist you and are ok with this.
So talk to your grandpa and parents about these options if you want.
Is your grandpa an experienced firearm owner or someone else in the family who could be a mentor and coach to you?

Last thing my mom would want me to see is me gutting a deer. I might down the road change the barrel but I am pretty sure the stock wont fit a smaller caliber because you put a magazine into it.

30-06 is a popular hunting cartridge. And with hunting/rifle season around the corner, all the big box stores & gun shops are loaded with ammo.
I was at Walmart today for motor oil. Stopped by the sporting good dept. They had Federal, Winchester, Remington & Springfield.

You don't need the expensive stuff to punch paper.
You might want to check your LGS for 30.06 ball ammo- it would be cheaper.
Privi partizan ammo is also inexpensive (ok for making holes.)

I am a 2nd tier vegetarian too. I only eat animals that eat grass and vegetables. lol

The thing is not so much the recoil but the guns are not well designed for proper shooting of those calibers.
The actions, barreling and triggers have come a long ways but the biggest problem are the stocks that are really bad in all budget guns.
They are so bad that we call them "Tupperware" stocks and the patriot is no exception. Whether plastic or wood they do not help with
the shooting. There are a few things that one can do but eventually a nice stock is the first step towards a better shooting.
With these budget long action rifles I find one can do a few things to the original stock to change the weight distribution and improve
stiffness until one has money to invest in a proper stock. Same thing with bedding a nice scope mount and those things.
I am telling you this because if you enjoy the recoil then it is better to do it well from the start.
Bedding and adding some stiffness is simple and you can do as a project with your grandpa. The patriot has huge problems with the
stock and the more the recoil the worse it gets.

Reloading can be done with minimum effort. you don't even need a scale to do pretty accurate volume/density reloading for a 30-06.
Can get a press for $25-30 bucks at a gun show and pre-owned dies for $10-15. A couple of plastic ammo boxes will double as reloading trays and brass can
sometimes be collected at the range bin or even ask for it around for once fired. Here is where the 308 will give you an advantage with
lots of sources for cheap or free brass. The 308 loaded with 150 to 175 gr has very similar perceived recoil to the 30-06.

The reason I mentioned a rifle that can swap calibers is because you have platforms like the Savage that can take other calibers
and can find barrels and bolt heads very inexpensively. The same 30-06 or 308w magazines will work with a number of calibers
but also you have DIY inexpensive conversions to take other magazines using the original mag well as template and can even
take pistol 9mm,40 call and even rimmed cartriges like 357 magnum, 44 mag, etc.. There are tricks to do the head space
from a couple of fired cases from your rifle. with a bit of epoxy filling one can make his own go and no go gauges. The only really
special too you need to reload is a pair of calipers that you can get quite inexpensively at a major retailer. I would also do
this with someone with experience to supervise and then once learned it is very rewarding to be able to do it yourself.
If someone can change a bicycle tire or fix the bicycle chain then they can do these things following proper instructions and safety.
Also the popular budget Savage Axis takes the same barrels as the other savage rifles and same bolt heads so one can use the same parts
and some can be found quite inexpensively like pre-owned barrels in ebay. So take this into account before buying the patriot.

If all you want is the recoil the chamber adapters will not help you to shoot smaller casings for practice and fun. But you might also use them
to convert a chamber to a popular budget cartrige and leave the insert in a swap barrel.

Talk to your Grandpa and parents and evaluate your options. Whatever you decide people in the forum will help you with ideas
and advice.

btw,
this is what people do to shoot budget calibers from the axis given you have the insert, bolt head, and/or swap barrel
whichever method you choose.

Take an inxpensive AR15 mag, cut the top and epoxy to the axis from the bottom. The follower needs to be modified
too but it takes 5 minutes.

This will give you access to inexpensive 223R or steel 7.62x39. Sometimes one can find preowned
barrels in very good condition.

Road trip from here to the ODCMP at Camp Perry. Buy a crate of Greek 30-06 or Sellier & Bellot. Both are M2. Not sure what the price is - I'm sure it has gone up in the 10 years since I did that. I road tripped when I lived in GA to the CMP South at Fort Anniston and bought 5 of those Greek crates from the 1980s. Not the tightest groups in the world; but I think I paid maybe $150 to $200 or so for each crate of 880 rounds.

reloading would be a wise choice. Lee reloading tools are really good for beginners and won't break the bank. Good project for you and grandpa if he's into that sort of stuff

Yep, I can imagine you coming across an issue, that issue being your grand dad possibly making a straw purchase the way you phrased it, which potentially could wind up with him being prosecuted if he is purchasing from a federally licensed dealer. While federal law has no age restriction on the buyer when purchasing from an unlicensed person, if you buy through a dealer with an FFL, you must be at least 18. I believe NY state also requires that you be 18 to purchase a firearm.

So, imagine you meant that you are giving your grandpa money to buy himself a gun that he will let you use but if you meant it the way you said it, such a purchase is illegal. Someone cannot legally buy a firearm from a licensed dealer with the intent of doing so for someone who cannot not legally purchase it.

A grand father is not immediate family. Regardless, I have never seen or heard of an exemption for immediate family when a straw purchase is being made. You simply cannot purchase a gun, from a federally licensed dealer, for someone ineligible to purchase it. In NY, a child between 12 and 15 can posses a firearm and ammunition under certain conditions but that does not mean he can purchase one. Those exemptions are found in N.Y. Penal Law § 265.20(a)(7), (16).

As for federal regulations regarding a straw purchase, here is one of the scenarios right from the BATFE's Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide:

An example of an illegal straw purchase is as follows: Mr. Smith asks Mr. Jones to purchase a firearm for Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith gives Mr. Jones the money for the firearm. If Mr. Jones fills out Form 4473, he violates the law by falsely stating that he is the actual buyer of the firearm. Mr. Smith also violates the law because he has unlawfully aided and abetted or caused the making of false statements on the form.

Under federal law, the granddad could possibly by the gun as a gift for his grandchild, from a non-licensee, and that would not be a straw purchase but I am uncertain if NY law would allow for a gift of a firearm to a minor thus making the minor the owner; I tend to doubt NY law would allow it.

Sorry OP, but Glenn B is correct. That would be considered straw purchase.

OP probably knows he won't be able to complete the purchase transaction because of his age. Therefore he is asking grandpa to do the purchase.
More than likely "OP" will have a hard time buying ammo for it too because retailers won't sell ammo to a minor.

Question (a.) on the 4473 form specifically ask if you are the actual transferee/ buyer of the firearm.
See the penalty for submitting a falsify Federal document (4473 form).
imo.. not worth the risk.

Lets not scare Dayten. I think he knows the way this works, it is just the way kids talk sometimes.
And if he didn't know the laws then he knows more now that he knew before.

The way I read it is that he wants to be the "spiritual" owner of that rifle.

Technically the owner is going to be his Grandpa and also for Dayton to use his rifle, any club is going to require that he goes to the hunting
safety course, goes through the range certification course and he must be accompanied by his grandpa or an adult family member to go
shooting or participate in the leagues like many kids do.
In private land there will not be "range certification" but kids must be supervised by a parent or adult family member.
It is the parent's responsibility to make sure the kids have the proper training and then supervision.
Also when purchasing ammo this will have to be done by his grandpa, parents or legal guardians. Same thing goes for powder and
other reloading supplies.

This is the way my kids learned the shooting and proper firearm ownership.

Even with the airguns they had training and proper handling supervision that is a great opportunity to introducing them to the shooting
sports from early age. Also it is common sense specially with the power of some modern PCP airguns in 22, 25, 9mm calibers and so on.

In NYS,, you cannot register a rifle. He buys it, gets a background check and it's his. After you turn 18 , legally he has to go to a gunshop and pay a fee for you to get a background check for it. Once you pass the background check, it's yours.

Why would you assume I meant an assault weapon, as it seems obvious you meant based on your reply? I guess you don't consider firearms registered in NYC as being registered within NYS but NYC is still part of NYS as far as I am aware.They have required long arms to be registered for a long time. Even though we were talking rifles, I must add that the state also has required pistol registration for decades if not over a century.

The bummer is not that I chose to obey the law and register 16 firearms (two long arms and 14 pistols) within this state but rather that such infringements on our RKBA exist in the first place. Instead of potentially causing disharmony among fellow gun owners by telling us all how my obeying the law has bummed you out, why not post things to help unite us in the fight for our rights. That is not only how I feel but what I practice and I do not feel sorry or bummed out about it.

I feel it is my right to state my opinion on an open forum on the matter as it is your right to state yours as you just did. If it causes you disharmony, that's your right as well to feel that way.

I would logically think that what you incorrectly stated about not being able to register a rifle within NYS would have been what may have confused people simply because it was wrong. But no, I was wrong for correcting you or at least it certainly seems to me that you think I was wrong even though I stated fact and not balderdash. I am guessing you don't like being corrected when you screw up, I suppose no one does but then again we are talking the legalities of things related to firearms so it is best to get it right. If wrong then learn from the correct facts when presented with them and adapt your statement to the facts. The truth is, the OP came here seeking information. Giving out blanket statements that do not hold water is not educating him but misinforming him. So I merely noted that I have registered long arms in NYS. You then replied and went on to explain how rifle registration was no longer permitted except with antiques. I noted the example of NY City requiring that rifles be registered and that NYC was definitely within NYS. Look Glen. I disagree with a number of your statements you just posted but because I respect you, I'll leave it be as you wish even though the inner me wants to dissect each and every point you made and tell you why I feel they are wrong. I have no hard feelings.

To the OP, unless you move to NYC which I seriously doubt you are going to since you have given no indication that you planned on doing so or moving to, you cannot register a rifle in NYS unless it is considered an "Antique" by NY State criteria and also an "Assault Weapon" by their criteria as well.
