30-06 or 450 bushmaster

I primarily hunt in the woods and occasionally in a field , between 50-350 yards primarily, ik 30-06 shoots further and is a bigger round, but I heard a 450 bushmaster is a perfect brush gun and out to 300 yards, I’m looking at the Ruger American predator in 450 bushmaster

30-06 is never a bad choice

For deer at 300 yards 450 bushmaster would be a bad choice.

There are several cartridges I would take over either one you listed. 270 Win in a long action or 308 in short action being two.

Just my opinion.

270 win .. its a flat shooter .. sight in at 100 and its a eazy hold over or under ..
if you reload you can reneck 30-06 brass to 270 ..

i reload it .. use the 130gn SPBT gameking bullets .. 4350 powder .. .. basicly making box store 270 hornady whitetail load .. for 1/2 the cost ..

Given the 50-350 yard ranges mentioned I would go with a scout rifle in .308 but that's just me. I have a Mossberg MVP Patrol rifle which is just great.

Put a low power scope (1-4X variable) on it and you be good to go in brush or open fields.

I won't disagree with this but I will tell you my Vortex 2x7 on the MVP vs. the Burris 1x4 on the AR I have is a lot lighter and I find I can reach out a lot further, easier (and given the scout profile, pop up hunting shots are quicker). Depends I guess on how many shots are 50 and how many are 350, and the rifle, I wouldn't throw a scout mount on an AR. Plus my eyes suck at this point.

I have the Ruger American in the .450 but have yet to take it in the field. I just can't give up what works for me, my Winchester compact in the 7-08..
Maybe now that I have a deer in the freezer I'll try it some day. I think it would be mighty deadly on deer , short and light handling too.. There are videos on YouTube with real decent group results out to 300 yards with this rifle & round . But comparing it to the 30-06 is like apple and oranges.

At 300 yards, drop on a 30-06 is about 8" vs about 19" for the .450. It also has higher SD and more energy at every distance. Unless you really want the challenge, I wouldn't give up all those quantifiable advantages for some amorphous 'brush busting' ability.

If you really wanted the AR-15 platform, then maybe I could see it. Even so, there are better AR-15 cartridges for reaching out to 350.

Neither one. For a do it all the simple way to go is the venerable 308. Powerful, plentiful and affordable.
If you want extra killing power an excellent brush one is the 358 winchester that you van buy or reload with anything from inexpensive 357 pistol bullets to 250gr bonded to take down a grizzly and everything in between.
Both offer amazing ballistics and the 358 is a magnum like killing recipe.
308 and 35 bores are also full of pkentiful and affordable bullet selection.
Anything larger than the 35 ot 375 bores is really a waste ballistically talking.

The 450 Bushmaster is a great brush cartridge. I've killed a few deer with one out of an AR-15. I would not choose it for anything much beyond 150 yds. There's just better rounds for that. So between the two choices you've given, I'd choose the '06 for reaching out there.

3006....my preferred caliber for hunting. Since I tend to keep the same calibers for multiple firearms and reloading purposes. Personally, I would try to get in closer than 350yds for hunting. If your open minded and not commited to a particular caliber than .308.

In my experience (limited), a good scope for thick brush to about 200-250 yds is a Leupold 2-7X with the thick reticle. Had one on a Marlin .444 Marlin brush gun - 16" ported barrel. Incredibly accurate - less than 1" 5 shot groups at 100 yds from the bench. Another one from my "Guns I Never Should Have Sold" Collection.

.30-06 has factory loads from 125 grains to 220. One of the most versatile factory cartridges there is.

I'll be weird and say 25-06. Flat shooting, fast and certainly capable on deer at 300 plus yards.
Can even double as a long range varmint rig with the right scope and the Federal 85 grain stuff

That's why put multiple shots down range,, the first few clear the brush and timber then several more rounds.. one round may get lucky if the deer run into them..

Though I've been primarily hunting with the .260 rem the last 20 years, For almost 40 years my Deer Drive rifle has been a 30.06 and never once have I felt under or over gunned.
Woodchucks to Moose, Military Service too, the "06" can and has done it all for over 100 years and counting.
