.308 bolt vs semi?

I will eventually be getting a rifle in a "full" size caliber. I had been planing on eventually procuring a .308 semi auto, an AR10 pattern or maybe a Galil. However the Tikka CTR has caught my eye and I'm wondering with 5.56 ARs at my disposal for high volume blasting that if I would be better served by a .308 (or 6.5 creedmore) bolt gun.

Maybe. I'd prolly go for the Galil in that case, longer range precision being covered by the Tikka. The CTR seems like a fine out of the box rifle. Would be good for our matches I think.

Right now the best in terms of features, accuracy and overall value are the Bergara B14 and the Savage 10 either tactical or predator (not the xp) that come with the accustock.
Both shoot amazingly well and they are the most popular actions on the planet with unparalled aftermarket and support.
Tikka are nie rifles but they are not better than those above and parts and magazines are more exclusive and limited.

Also the hog hunter. Toss the tuperware stock away at some point and add a b&c / ai magazine and nothing else is needed.
But check out the bergara and its features...
R700 action with integrated recoil lug, side bolt release, amazing extractor better than the badger or even sako, timmey trigger, ai magazine system, etc.... the works for the cost of a remington SPS and with the same blueprint of R700 it leaves the SPS amd other 2000 dollar riflesnin the dust...all out of the box ready to shoot.

Just out of curiosity. Are you planning on using it for sport shooting at over 600 yards? Hunting anything larger than deer?

If not and just because that's good enough. There is nothing wrong with that. But if it's not and you are saving pennies, your AR can do anything the bolt gun does.

I like the looks of that. It's twice what a CTR runs though.

Just a range toy, and for participating in @dsdmmat's 100 yard supported matches. I think a little CZ 527 carbine would serve well for that too. I've been wanting one of those. But I definitely want a bolt gun at some point, just because I enjoy the tactile sensations of running one. I miss my Enfield.

Right about at 1k. Right where the CTR sits. Yes the mags are stupid expensive, but they are double stack 10 rounders and that's cool. I'd proly only get one extra anyway.

I missed getting a hog hunter at the gander going out of business sale. They had a few for like $375. I got cheap and waited for them to go even lower then they were gone. Some guy bought a bunch (and prob listed them somewhere).

I love my Savage 10 ftpSR. It's a fantastic value.

Getting trigger time is a big problem for me too. It's why I do my all day range marathons.

I did this little ammo test last year for my ctr. First time out with this rifle after I recovered from last summer back injury. This summer has been crazy busy.

My semi auto 308s haven't left the barn for a while, neither have my bolt 308s for that matter. I shoot in two leagues in the summer so my '06s, 6.5s and .223s get the bulk of the range time. I may break out the 308s in the fall or winter, they seem to like the colder air.
