New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a series of actions Tuesday to prevent the distribution of the 3D gun designs. Cuomo issued a cease-and-desist letter to Defense Distributed to block the distribution of designs for 3D guns in New York. The governor called the impending release "reckless."
Cuomo also directed state police to issue a notice reminding New Yorkers that manufacturing firearms defined as assault weapons is illegal in New York.
"As the nation rises up and calls for action against gun violence, it is absurd and frightening that the federal government wants to make accessing an automatic weapon as easy as hitting print," he said. "New York is proud to have the strongest gun safety laws in the nation, and we won't let this federal government take us backwards."
Cuomo said he will pursue legislation to bolster the state's gun safety laws and outlaw private production of all 3D and so-called "ghost guns" that are untraceable and invisible to metal detectors.
Cuomo's actions came after Pennsylvania went to court Sunday to block early distribution of the plans, which weren't supposed to be available for download until Wednesday. But more than 1,000 designs were downloaded recently, in advance of the agreed upon August 1 date.
U.S. judge blocks release of gun blueprints for 3-D printing
U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik in Seattle, Washington said the blueprint’s publication could cause irreparable harm to U.S. citizens.
“There are 3-D printers in public colleges and public spaces and there is the likelihood of potential irreparable harm,” Lasnik said at the end of a one-hour hearing on the lawsuit.

We’ve won a major victory for common sense and public safety. I'm grateful to @AGOWA Ferguson and my fellow Attorneys General for our continued, successful partnership on this and so many other issues.
This is a *nationwide* order. In every state across the country, the Trump administration is now blocked from allowing the distribution of 3-D printing plans for guns.
#BREAKING: We just secured an order blocking Trump admin from allowing the distribution of plans to print 3-D guns. As we argued in our suit, it is crazy to give criminals the tools to build untraceable, undetectable 3-D printed guns at the touch of a button.
I find it funny that "This is a *nationwide* order. In every state across the country, the Trump administration is now blocked from allowing the distribution of 3-D printing plans for guns." But the 9th circuit ruling that CA can't ban magazines based on size only applies to the 9th circuit.
No conflict, @jimc. The court was ruling on a California-specific case involving a California law. The 3D case in question is federal (multiple state AG's).
It is a crappy decision here, and I hate these grand standing nationwide injunctions (and I'm skeptical about their legality) but comparing this to the magazine decision is apples and oranges.
