It's all good. It's a great point. Even if it's legal, it's hard to tell and I can see a temporary confiscation happening and legal fees associated. I prefer I think about these things now then to think about them behind bars.

The mini 14 is highly modular. Just purchase a standard Ranch model with full stock in either wood or polymer. Shoot it, enjoy it, practice with it. After you move to a free state, you can purchase any number of modular, drop in, tactical pistol grip stocks with folding or adjustable stock. Taking a semi auto rifle and converting it to single shot to stay compliant just isn't worth it. You might as well just get a bolt action rifle in 223/556.
