I’ve also been told to say I want to press charges against that man for Xyz then say you need to see a doctor and schedule a meeting with the police and your lawyer after the doctors visit. The doctors visit buys you time to process what happened and respond rationally to questions instead of when you’re all hyped up.

I have seen many variations on what you should do after an incident, but all of them share the notion that you should generally keep your mouth shut.

It is not the time to convince officers that you are in the right, and they are not the ones you need to convince. Accept a night in the gray bar hotel if necessary, in the long run it'll be worth it.

The main exception is if there is evidence that they appear to be missing, you may need to point that out. "the knife he had fell through that storm drain / landed in that truck bed, etc...."
