Just wondering what setups or ideas people have about the 7mm-08 round for a hunting pistol for whitetail. We still have no rifle in our county shotgun and pistol only but I have heard the loophole is a good single shot in a solid rifle caliber. Just looking for more opinions

Better check to ensure you are not restricted to straight walled rifle cartridges. Most shotgun/handgun only areas specify straight walled cartridges only.
I added what I found on the dec website about what you can use but if I should look somewhere else or am missing something please let me know.

This doesn’t really tell you anything except the description of the guns. If you want to know call the DEC office in your county and ask if pistols are required to be straight walled cases or not? They will tell you if you are good to go or not.
If you are good to go with the 7-08 the TC contender or Encore is probably the best single shot option out there. Actually it is probably the best choice overall for any caliber in the single shot handgun world. However the parent company has discontinued the TC line up as of a couple of months ago. There are companies who make barrels for them which are still going strong and there are a lot of receivers (new and used) on the market still.

That may be true, I have no first hand knowledge of the hunting restrictions in NY. I just know there are a few states just west of NY which have the straight walled restrictions in their shotgun, pistol only hunting areas. It may be a non issue and a quick call is all it would take to figure it out.

There are bargains to be had for Encore Pistols, especially in exotic calibers.
Starting in the late 70's handgunning for Big game was all the rage not to mention Silhouette shooting with guys using 10-1/2" barrel Super Blackhawks, T/C's, Dan Wesson's, etc.
When (if we even take it in) T/C's come in, they'll sit for months or even years without even a nibble....we've got a gorgeous XP-100 in .221 Fireball and the only interest is "what's that thing?" I think the fad has been gone for as long as it was.

Why do they have to be single shot and not bolt or lever action?
If not what about double barrel?
Even in a single break open there is a better way to make a single or double that is a stubbed action.
All one needs is a set 12ga front end and then have it cut and threaded to receive tihe barrel and calober of ones choice using a barrel nit for headspacing
The NEF is a great platform for this.
For doubles the baikal SxS since ot has ab3 point locking fland why they were also offered in rifle calibers like 308.
Inserts is another way to easily swap calibers.
