I was thinking since I saw one of the guys here post About smoking ribs, can we please have a recipe forum? Not just for game food, but maybe just general recipes so people can exchange? And maybe a sub forum for the AR15? Just to keep them separate from the other long guns? Not sure if either have been suggested, just thought I'd put it out there. If they have been I'm sorry.

Note: I added to the end of your title there so it was more clear what this thread was about specifically. Easier for us (and everybody really) for point of reference.
So, there's always a very real issue with dividing a forum too far and into too many forums and sub-forums. Some forums over the years have dug their own (virtual) graves by dividing too far, and perhaps especially so in cases of forums still in their relatively early stages of growth. Having said that, because of the very different levels of how relevant these two things are to a gun forum, I'd have to address them separately.
As for the recipe forum, I'd say that's pretty highly unlikely to ever be a thing. In a way, it could potentially be said that this forum already has a bit of an.. well, an issue of an identity crisis in it's intended purpose as primarily a firearms forum. That's sort of neither here nor there though. The concept of a specific recipe forum or subforum though.. It's just too far off topic and specific a thing I think to warrant a section unto itself. We do have an off-topic section of course and I think it's great that people might use that to share recipes and all sorts of other information. I see no reason there shouldn't be a thread about general recipes of course; that sounds like a fine idea. Something that far off topic though would have to have one hell of a major showing of interest, and one proven over an extended period of time, to get a dedicated forum section.
Now, the AR-15 section thing , that's a different thing of course. I don't recall if it'd been suggested before, but the staff may have discussed it at some point. I can say I'm pretty certain it's not going to happen right now, but I won't say that it never will.
My personal thoughts on it though are that it doesn't really make a lot of sense. Speaking for right now, I don't think there's nearly enough posts overall to warrant the distinction and make a new sub-forum that either thins out the current long gun section or has an underwhelming presence in itself.. or both. Beyond that though, I also just don't really see how a specific section really does anyone much good.
We are very open to hearing why any users think it might be though. I think that's important to say, because it's all about the users in the end. For me personally, before I'd support it I'd have to hear (or read) some cases made for why a separate sub-forum would be advantageous or helpful to users, made with reasonable consideration for overall impact and long term investment to the site's quality. If those cases were good enough I'm sure I could be convinced into it.
A lot of people here came from 'the other place' (Including you if I'm not mistaken. Also 2/3 of our staff being former staff there..heh) and I know that place had a specific forum section for Ar-15 style rifles. That being so though , a couple of things have to be considered. Firstly, the former owner of that place is in the AR building business. Secondly, the section (before the transfer of ownership) was listed with the description of something like "Supported by AR-15.com" (or something like that). So, while I'm not saying that there wasn't some advantage to users in having it, just understand that there was clear financial incentive as the reason it was introduced.

Well I thought the recipes would be a good spot for people to discuss food related things, tips and tricks, etc. But as you said we really aren't a high traffic site, and there aren't many posts. But giving things like recipes a chance, might give others some extra things to talk about, and get more involvement in the forum. I'm sure there are lots of hunters and fisherman here that would post in that section, people who grill and use smokers, and just the average joe who wants to post about food. But I agree with bananabandit, there doesn't need to be a sub forum for everything. But as far as the AR15 sub forum, I could see that as being a big help. That's what a lot of people post about and like to read about. It just keeps the AR stuff away from all your other standard rifles. Plus the people who aren't into AR's don't have to dig through the AR posts to read about the other style rifles. But I do have to say, it's nice not having the front page cluttered. Regarding firearms subforums I was courious but I am affraid there is not enough interest in firearms
related talk to be able to keep that moving.
I think subforums would make more sense in the top areas of interest that are Off-Topic and Politics.
But not sure there is enough interest for a Food subforum but probably more than the AR15 anyway.
