6.5 Creedmoor
Last Sunday I took my six year old grandson out shooting up in the Cascade Mountains, we left the house around Noon and stayed out until last light.
I bought a dozen eggs for $1.39 for targets for the Grandson to shoot, With the Marlin 17HMR he was one for one, With the 327 Federal Magnum loaded with 32 Shorts and 32 Longs he was around four shots for each hit, Not bad for being only six years old. He also got to shoot a Savage 410 single-shot shotgun loaded with number 7 1/2 shot all by him self.
After we got done shooting we picked up the brass other people left there at the gravel pit, just over twenty pounds of it. Mostly 223 & 9mm with a few 45 Colt, 380acp, 30/06 and a few 7mm magnum. Over all a good score. I think who ever was shooting the 223 was drinking because we picked up around a box & a half of loaded 223 bullets an around a box of loaded 22lr ammo in the same general area as the 223.
After I clean it up and de-prime the 9mm & 223 I'll trade most of it off for brass or bullets that I need.
My grandson loves picking brass up, I give him $5 for picking the brass up and another $5 for helping separate the brass, discard the damaged brass in to the scrape container and help de-prime brass unill he gets bored.
We squeeze the damaged brass with a small pair of channel locks before it goes in to the scrape bucket in case a good piece accidently gets tossed in to the scrape, it can be found quickly.
He can load all of the guns he shoots all by himself, I don't have to baby sit him. His favorite pistol is the Ruger Mark 2 with the heavy taper barrel.
His favorite rifle is the Marlin bolt action 17 HMR.
He can also shoot the ruger 77/357 rifle all by him self and hit the target.
This year most of my shooting was with just him, We try to get out every weekend, but with the rain season here already it will slow down until spring time, so we'll be loading a BUNCH of BULLETS for next spring.
I'll be teaching him how to reload rifle & pistol ammo this winter.
He can out shoot most adults that i take out shooting, I like betting him against adults i take out shooting, a dollar a shoot, Shot for Shot. He generally take money home for buying ammo with.
Here is an older picture of the gravel pit we go to, it is about forty miles from the house up in the cascade mountains, and about 5 miles back in the woods on a BLM service road.
He will get better at shooting as he grows some and the guns fit him better, until then he compensates and does great for his age.
Another fun cheap target for the 17 HMR is the 12 packs of the store brand soda for only $2 a twelve pack. Shake them up and the 17HMR blows them up. Empty soda & beer cans work out good to filled up with water.
