A LITTLE HELP FROM THE UPSTATERS PLEASE

Guys n gals, I'm in Queens and we have been overrun by very large raccoons and opossums. Living here all my life over 47 years and never saw any of these pests until this year. Think they are living under my deck. I know not to leave any garbage and food around etc, but does anyone have any good way to keep these things away from the property? Some of the the larger coons have ripped up my pool cover,destroyed and chewed all the kids pool toys,and make a mess out of the yard. They are also not afraid of people. Sometimes I see them during the day, I know those are possibly rabid. The city doesn't care and I don't feel like spending big bucks to have a pest control guy set traps...Any ideas? legal ones please....

Get a ground hog. They don't like raccoons and will protect their territory.

Other than that you are pretty much stuck hiring a company to trap and remove them. If you do it you can be fined (crazy isn't it).

Since you can't shoot them where you are, and poison would likely leave you a dead racoon in some impossible to get to spot, maybe some sort of scent they don't like might drive them out. Or live trap them and relocate to a city park at least a mile away!

Also note if you do trap them, both animals are extremely aggressive and very capable of harming you. So take precautions and watch where you place your fingers.

you said you have a pool, trap him in a havaheart trap and give him swimming lessons in the pool inside the trap. Often the lessons don't work but it's worth a try.

See if you can borrow a large enough Have A Heart trap from someone. My local town actually loans them out. Then, as Harry Hood says, give them swim lessons. And wear heavy welding gloves and be very careful!

Years ago, my parents home was overrun with squirrels and chipmunks. About 150 of them were caught and sent for swim lessons in one summer. Sadly, the entire class failed.

Most urban racoons arent afraid of any scents though.

Have you considered a wall to keep them from crossing.... onto your property? The raccoons, that is.
