Granted, the can is on a duty gun locked in his car. We do not know if he owns some of these items in his personal life.

Honestly all your duty guns should have cans.

It's not like you're going to say "hold on Mr. Perp while I get my ear pro on".

If it were anything but guns and cops OSHA would mandate them.

Yeah it’s a strange misconception that true gun guys need to get over. When I came on, guys like me we’re actually laughed at and called “buffs”. Now, it’s so far gone that even saying buff is pointless because there’s so few of us.

The gun is not even close to the most important tool of a cop. Upwards of 95% of cops will never fire their gun on duty except at the range. They have zero need or desire to become “gun guys”.

The notion that cops are gun guys has always boggled my mind. I could believe a slightly higher % of cops than the general public, but not much more.

Do the people who think that also think all cab drivers are car guys ? All office workers are computer geeks ?

This comes down to propaganda and the ignorant spewing their hate, envy and jealousy.


I would think that less than 15% of officers I know own anything but two pistols and a hunting gun (shotgun or bolt action).

I get made fun of all the time at work for owning so many firearms.

I think it's pushed by the "only cops have the expertise to own guns" crowd. i.e. Hollywood.

They want to cultivate the idea that cops have expertise with firearms akin to a 4 year degree and that owning one with anything less is irresponsible.

When I discuss gun ownership with left leaning people they never believe me when I tell them how little actual gun related training you guys are required to have.

I trained much, much more and received tons more classroom education as an MP than from my current department.

Not being an MP, even in SF, handgun training was terrible. So I’ve actually done far more at work/personally than the Army.

But I got out in 2004. I’ve heard it has improved.

My department is pretty simple, unless needed, all we do is yearly, sometimes twice a year qualification. Little training is given to non shooters, but if you can shoot, you qualify and that is about all.

I went to many different types of handgun and rifle training while I was in. I feel like I was pretty lucky, not many go through much of the classes that I did.

My personal training and practice is much, much more involved than my jobs training.
