A question about permits I think I know the answer to.

Ive been told there is no such thing as a dumb question.....so here it goes.
My wifes 63 year old aunt and uncle moved here from Arizona a few years ago.
They recently signed up to take their permit class here in Chautauqua Co.
The aunt tells my wife today that she was told by the instructor she will be taking the class from that as soon as the class is over, they will HAVE a "resident" permit and be able to buy and have a gun in their home immediately. The aunt is pretty sure this is what she was told.
I tried to explain the process as I understand it, but I havent paid much attention to the "rules" in the last few years. The aunt and uncle are dead set they will have a handgun by this Sunday.....they take the permit class on Saturday. I explained that our county has never had a residential permit. We have always had target/hunting and unrestricted permits technically but our local judge only gives unrestricted.
The last I knew the laws have only got worse sinse the CCIA...am I missing something?

Your wife’s aunt definitely either got very inaccurate information, or completely misunderstood the regulations. Perhaps they were told that after the class was complete they will be ready to APPLY for permits.

ohh i think they have open carry too and no permit needed too

Arizona has passed “Permitless Carry.” That means anyone who can legally own/possess a firearm and is 21 or older can carry it concealed without any type of permit/license.

Thats exactly what I believe.
As far as I know the emergency injunction for the CCIA has not been granted so they will need the 16 hours of training also.
I told them they might want to wait awhile because the CCIA will fail eventually, but they are dead set they will have a handgun by Sunday.

Funny thing is, they would have no clue.
Neither of them have even owned a firearm and have extremely limited experience with firearms. They may or may not have a relative who has, in the last few years, allowed them to fire handguns for their first time. The aunt is 63, the uncle is in his late 50s. The uncles father just passed in Oct 2022 and left a handful of firearms to the uncle. His sister in Texas has custody of these firearms right now. I am pretty excited to see what he has. The uncles sister will send firearms to NYS FFL when hes ready. The only info ive heard is the father hasnt bought a firearm in 30+ years and one of the handguns says 17.......9x19.......Austria......on one side.
Im hoping for a gen one G17 because the father hasnt bought a firearm in decades.....apparently.
The uncle is NOT interested in glocks, so the glock is mine......apparently.

Interesting... It's been some time since I've looked at Erie county pistol application rules

I just downloaded the newest packet date 08/22 presumably to be ready for the new nonsense that started 9/1



And behold, there is now a section to apply for a premise permit. I might dig into this a little more I think I can get my wife interested enough in this. She wants to shoot my pistols and use them at home if ever needed to defend herself or kids if I'm not home and it's idiotic she would be committing a crime now if she does.

I don't recall ever noticing that before. Maybe it is new? It doesn't solely reference only on premesis for employment it seems to reference carrying for employment is a separate category from obtaining just a premesis lisence

This is definitely new in our county.
We just had target/hunting and concealed carry. Our judge didnt give the target though, just unrestricted.
This residence permit eliminates the need for the extra training.
And the course s less expensive than the CC course.

Chautauqua county can move very fast in granting permits. 8 months ago one of my coworkers got his unrestricted permit there. From when he turned in his application to when his permit was granted was 2 weeks. I couldn’t believe how fast he got it. I’m sure things are taking much longer now, but Chautauqua county is definitely one of the faster counties. I thought I did good by getting my Erie county permit in 3 months lol.

I live here and have several friends who have recently got their permits.
Its in the 6 month range right now.
Chautauqua is one of the most gun friendly counties in NYS.
Prior to the CCIA, our judges NEVER gave anything but unrestricted carry permits.
As of now, they make it as easy as possible.

My wifes aunt and uncle just did it yesterday.
You need the 5 hour course from a certified instructor which was $90.
Then Indentego fingerprints......$102
NYS PP license..... $30
And $3 to add a gun.
These are the prices here anyays.
Thats all the training needed. You only need the 16 hours for CC.
Unfortunately if you decide down the road you want a CC, this 5 hours does NOT count towards that. You must complete the 16 hour CC course.

The state has designated that there are two types of permits, a premise permit and a concealed carry permit. One you need the 16+2 training for but you do not for the premise permit.
They will not have this at the end of the class though as you indicated.

I was told for wire county you didn’t need any training but the new application released a few weeks ago now says you do. They used to have the 3-4 hour handgun safety course that was offered by a local trainer and I didn’t see it on his website so I asked him about it and he said it’s not longer needed for a premise permit, but the application contradicts that.
