So yesterday I took Onsight Firearms Training’s Essential Close Quarter Defensive Pistol course given in Cortlandt Manor. The class size was great. At least for the students, not sure about for the instructors wallets. There were 7 of us taking the class so the ratio of students to instructors was nice. Another plus was the presence of someone in the class with medical training. This individual was working for the training company. It seems like a “chicken little” type thing to think about, however, in my eyes, it’s a great benefit since Mr. Murphy tends to hide in places one doesn’t expect him.
The class started off with a safety briefing and then moved onto some basics to warm up with and I’m sure it was also designed for the instructors to see what they were working with and how fast to progress things. The experience in the group ranged the gamut from someone who had shot a pistol only a few times, some LEOs, a retired LEO, and go figure a geologist/engineer. The max distance of shooting was at the 15 yard line, which does makes sense after all (I refer you to the name of the class). The shooting progressed from your typical punch holes in paper to warm up and then got into some more interesting things that most folks haven’t tried before. Then it got into some more unorthodox (no offence meant to the attendees) shooting positions included standing shoulder to shoulder with the other folks on the line, shooting from sitting positions (mimicking at a restaurant, trains, etc). And then it ended with some very eye opening drills which involved you and a partner.
And for those of you who want to truly prove your masculinity, there was hand holding during some of the exercises. Just saying, how tough are you and yet in touch with your inner self?
This is the 2nd class I’ve taken with Onsight and I’m looking forward to taking some additional ones in the near future. Ben is a solid instructor with a great sense of humor and a disturbingly pale underbelly.
