I’ve had my CCW permit for just over 2 years now and, until I found OnSight Firearms Training, I had only taken a few low-level NRA training courses (with mediocre instructors). When I found OnSight, I was cautiously optimistic on their instruction quality, given the fact the training would be in the communist stronghold of Westchester County, NY. After reading a few reviews and an AAR, I decided to take a chance and sign up for their Defensive Pistol Shooting class.
Upon arrival, Ben and Rachel completed the obligatory range safety instruction, and then we moved immediately onto the firing line to starting practicing draw/re-holster techniques. Ben and Rachel gave each of us personal attention and critiquing, which turned out to be the close-quarters instruction style they exhibited the rest of the day. Once we were all solid on our draw/re-holstering, we loaded up magazines and returned to the firing line for our first drill.
Lining up on the 25-yard line (somewhere that I normally never shot handgun from), we were told to attempt to put 10 rounds into the black center of a B8 target. None of us managed to get all 10 into the black, but it did put things into perspective and gave everyone a good baseline. From there, we moved up to the 3-yard line and then progressively moved back to the 5, 7, 10, 15 and 25-yard lines.
After that, we really got into the fun stuff. Failure drills, shooting while moving, discretionary command shooting, timed shooting/reload drills, and a whole host of other things were worked throughout the rest of the day.
I felt so much more proficient after taking the class, I decided to take it again just three weeks later to continue to reinforce the skills and good habits that Ben and Rachel had instilled in me. To my pleasant surprise, my second time taking the class was a totally different set of drills and instruction (except for that horrific B8 target at 25-yards).
Ben and Rachel are fantastic instructors, and I am very very happy that I took a chance on them. I’m already registered for five more of their upcoming courses (additional pistol courses as well as carbine courses) and am looking forward to my skills progressing under their tutelage.
