Santino William Legan has been identified as the 19-year-old suspect accused of killing three people and wounding several others in a mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California, according to CBS News. The shooting Sunday night on the final day of the annual charity event at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy left three dead, 12 injured and the suspected shooter, Legan, killed by police. Several others were injured in the chaos after shots were fired, but were not shot, authorities said.
The dead include 6-year-old Stephen Romero. Romero’s grandmother and mother were also shot, but are expected to survive.
Police said he was armed with an “SKS AK-47-type assault rifle” that was “purchased legally” by Legan in Nevada on July 9. He was reportedly living with family members in Nevada.

All the news is reporting that he bought this rifle legally in Nevada and brought it to California illegally, but also that this kid was a lifelong Gilroy resident. If so that's not true, it's was an illegal transfer, as an FFL can only legally transfer rifles to an out-of-state buyer if it is legal in both states. If the shooter put a California address on his ATF 4473 and presented ID with a California address, the gun shop could be in hot water. If he didn't use a California ID and address, then the FBI dropped the ball not catching the discrepancy. Also the shooter was breaking the law just buying it, whether he used a fraudulent address and ID or not.
So in summary:
1. Big Mike had better shut the hell up.
2. This is another case of a gun-free zone shooting where not only would laws not have stopped the shooting but also where existing laws were apparently not only ineffective but also ignored. It wasn't a legally purchased rifle.
