Air travel with a pistol

I fly often with fire arms. I put flag's in the chamber so I dont have to handle the fire arm to prove its unloaded. I use my Kimber cases as they are rather thin and I can fit 3 of my glocks in it. I use a plastic ammo case or original packaging for my ammo normally up to 11 pounds, I keep my magazines in a separate in another Hard sided Locked Kimber case, I never bring hollow points in case I have to leave from or arrive at or get re routed thu a state that doesn't allow hollow points. I was told along time ago by a LEO I ran into that New Jersey may consider a loaded magazine a loaded fire arm so I never load my magazines in my luggage . When the agent ask for my drivers license I always hold onto it until they make EYE contact and then I calmly and quietly tell them "I am traveling with 3 UNLOADED firearms following tsa and the airlines requirement how would you like me to proceeded .

One time as I was leaving Orlando air port the fellow in front of me yelled out he had fire arms, and the entire Jet blue line was loosing there mind as he was trying to hand the gun case to the agent. I mean I was actually startled as he just pulled the case out of his Bag.

I await there instructions , when the say show it to me .I put my suite case on the scale so I can open it away from me and the line be hind me so only the agent and whom ever is behind them can see. I keep my key to the locks on a lanyard around my neck to make sure I don't lose it and so I can open the case if they ask.I put a copy of my licence and the licence of the sate I am traveling to in the case. I have printed out copies of the airline procedures in the suite case.

I am sorry for your brother , and your family. Be strong for him. We walk with people every day battling cancer and you would never know it. the more mature I get the more I realize be kind to every one as you just don't know your kindness my be only thing they get good out of the day

I remove the slide from the upper. That way you aren't racking the slide at the counter. Chamber flags could work but a ticket agent that knows nothing about firearms could tell you to remove it to see if it isn't loaded.

Most are pretty good but some just don't know.

Just declared a firearm in Stewart Airport. Same as before. Declared to ticket agent. He asked for my ID and carry permit. I filled out the declaration. I opened the locked box to show him that it was unloaded. (Had the slide removed so that I didn't have to rack it in front of everyone). Locked it back up. Placed it back into my checked bag. Locked my checked bag and onto the conveyor belt it went behind him.

No cop. No additional anything.

Hollow points are only illegal in nj IF YOU ARE BREAKING ANOTHER LAW WHILE IN POSSESION OF THE HOLLOW POINTS.

Yes. If you are legal then the hollow points are legal as well. (People hunt with hollow points in nj. )

There are variations in how your bags are handled post-declaration, based upon the airport and the airline.

Checked a bag with a firearm at KROC, and the ticket agent just put it on the belt.
Checked a bag with a firearm at KBUF, and the ticket agent just put it on the belt.
Checked a bag with a firearm at KATL, and the ticket agent walked it and me over to TSA for hand screening before putting it on the belt.
Checked a bag with a firearm at KSEA, and the ticket agent sent me with my bag over to TSA for hand screening, and then TSA put it on the belt.
Checked a bag with a firearm at KBOS, and the ticket agent just put it on the belt.

All of the above were with JetBlue

In a couple of weeks, I'm flying Delta for the first time. I've heard (though not confirmed) that they put a large zip tie around the luggage, put a special tag on the outside, and then make you pick it up at the baggage office at your destination. We'll see what really happens.

Yes every trip I took to Alabama delta the bag is zip tied and picked up in there booth next to carousel. They also said you can not cut the zip tie till you off air port property. I keep a nail clipper in the outside pocket of my luggage now just incase it gets zip tied again . I also arrived in clearwater Fl (house shopping) and had zero problem with flying with a firearm.

Your pistol cannot be loaded, your magazines can be but they cannot be inserted in the pistol. You are limited to 11 pounds of ammo as well.

I normally bring 4 loaded magazines and a 50 round box of ammo when I travel, they are locked in the same box as the pistol and I have never had any issues traveling anywhere I fly. I did have one ticket counter lady ask me if the ammo was in the origional package once. I told her yes. It doesn't have to be in the origional package though. TSA checks your stuff the airline doesn't.

This. I'm a cop assigned to an airport that has been mentioned in this thread. I literally had the discussion with TSA over the "ammo in a separate container" this past Thursday morning. Upon pointing out their own policy, the CCW holder was able to travel with the loaded magazine in the same locked box. He STUPIDLY put the magazine in the weapon. That was a problem.

Because free America believes you have a right to be armed. NY has residents brainwashed into believing only people that have been vetted by the state are the only ones who should have handguns is a national norm. It is not, Never has been nor should it ever be.

It's amazing in other free states the rules we have been wrongly subjected to here that do not apply. My SR9, 9E, and SR45 all take 17 round mags as alternatives, and bet your ass I will have them when I travel. My son-in-law can keep/store them for all future visits in his gun safe.

I maintain my Utah and PA license to give me more options travel-wise as well.

They can SAY whatever the hell they want, but that has no bearing on legality. The very first thing I do upon retrieving my checked bag is to find a quiet corner and inspect it to make sure my firearm is intact. In most cases, I find a restroom and put it on before I leave the airport.

Bob do that in a Florida airport and your violating the laws and subject to arrest. its not just what they say its an enforceable law in 8 states, make sure you know the laws of the state your traveling into. I am all about following laws not just implied restrictions but there are 8 states that do not allow airport carry

Quick follow up:
Flew KROC > KDTW > KIND and then home.

Checked in with desk agent at KROC and advised I had unloaded firearms to declare. He asked to see the case, but did not ask to verify status of the firearms. Filled out declaration tag and placed it in the bag before it went on the belt. He asked me to stand by at the counter until the bag cleared security. Once it cleared (less than five minutes) I was able to proceed through security and to my gate. When I arrived at KIND, I went right to the Delta baggage office. Agent there retrieved my bag, verified my ID, and handed me the bag. There was a zip tie on the zipper, bit nothing more.

The return flight was slightly different. Checked in with the desk agent at KIND and advised I had unloaded firearms to declare. She also asked to see the case, but did not ask to verify status of the firearms. Filled out declaration tag and placed it in the bag before it went on the belt. She then handed me a small sheet and instructed me to proceed through security. I showed the sheet to the TSA agent at the checkpoint, and he told me that I needed to check with a TSA supervisor after my security screening but before departing the area. Couldn't find a supervisor, but chatted up a really cute cop who happily grabbed one for me. Apparently the procedure at KIND is to hold passengers with firearms in their checked baggage at security until their bags clear. Once my bag cleared, I proceeded to my gate. When I arrived back at KROC, the Delta baggage office was closed. I had to have AIRCOM page a Delta ramp agent to bring my bag to me. He verified my ID and handed me my bag. There were no zip ties on the bag at all.

I liked getting the notification on my phone when my bag was loaded on the plane and then offloaded from the plane. Having to retrieve the bag from the baggage office wasn't much on an inconvenience. It was nice not having to wait for the carousel and fight with people to get to my bag and get out.

All things considered, I have no real complaints with how Delta handled it.

I went for the NRA Annual meeting. I do have other permits, but Indiana recognizes permits from all other states, so my NY permit was sufficient.
