Councilwoman Vickie Paladino, a member of Holden’s Common-Sense Caucus, said a new law is needed to prevent illegal car stereos from hitting the streets.

“We proposed to make it illegal to operate a vehicle in New York State with a non-factory sound system installed which utilizes an external power supply,” Paladino said. “This would make these cars impossible to register and inspect and subject them to impoundment if found in use.”

I don't like the ghetto blasters, they are a nuisance. The easy solution is if someone's radio is too loud to issue a citation for that specific individual.

And on the same topic really loud motorcycles are equally annoying.

But this is ridiculous, just another attempt by the government to control our lives and what we do with our property. I think you have right to modify your vehicle it's your property and as long as it's not a safety issue to make it less roadworthy you should be able to personalize it.

Do you really want to give police the additional reason to pull you over for "probable cause" when they're fishing to see if they can catch you doing something. "Do you know why I pulled you over? It sounds like you have an aftermarket stereo. Do you mind if I search your car to take a look?"

This is what pisses me off about nanny state government they just waste their time and our resources looking to invent problems that don't exist to justify their time and power. They should be spending their time trying to simplify our laws and eliminate things that don't make sense.

1) How will they know if the radio is aftermarket or not? Many new "radios" nowadays are specifically built to integrate seamlessly into a vehicle's electronics and dashboard styling.
2) WTF is an "external power supply"? Is this ignorant putz seeing cars driving around towing generators, or on long extension cords? If it runs off the car's alternator/battery then it isn't "external", is it? Or are they talking about a system utilizing an amp, like a LOT of OEM systems do?

you don't need huge speakers or amps to put out a LOT of sound.
I once "won" a car stereo battle against some punk in a camaro that had huge speakers and amps (visible), merely using the stock radio in a Chevy Spectrum and a tape of bagpipe music. The kid finally admitted defeat by moving his car to another part of the parking lot.

I was into aftermarket systems when I was younger. My system registered 143.3 dB in a competition, powered by a stock alternator, and I was small fries compared to a lot of other competitors.

After reading the article this doesn’t even need to be done. They have having problems with gang bangers doing large parties all night with trunks full of speakers keeping residents up. Where are the cops for this. Make a law that these people will be punished for their actions, oh wait we can’t punish people.

Have tinted front windows and completely tinted front windshield is illegal in nys and makes a vehicle fail nys inspection unless it has a dmv issued tint exemption sticker. I’m sure that just like with illegal window tint nobody would ever find a way around this law with their vehicles.
