While I agree, I also believe the entire election process could be administered fairly and securely on an application like Twitter with the incorporation of a blockchain.
When the clock strikes midnight on election day, all eligible voters can begin a fresh registration process with multi step identity verification, each mining a single token (ballot), and then using that token to cast their vote.
Announcing candidacy, nominating petitions, and campaign contributions could all be handled similarly.
I would even trust Musk (to some degree) to run that system.

A fully electronic voting process could be built, but not like that.
It would have to be completely open source, and completely replicateable.
I.e. all the hardware and software is a completely public design.
And all the data is available publicly for free by anyone who cares to download it.
There would be no need for recounts, because anyone who wants can count it, and if they don't get the exact same answer as the official one, then we need to identify which one screwed up.
But, it can't be like mining from a block chain, because that can't be unique to a voter. That's "whoever can throw the most CPUs at it gets the most votes".
But, there is a fundamental problem that cannot be overcome to have a truly secure election.
There is no way, even theoretically, to have both fully auditable votes and secret ballots.
There is a trick that can get close, where any voter could identify if their vote was tampered with, but they wouldn't be able to prove it. If there were any way for them to prove it, then the ballot wouldn't be secret.

Why couldn't mining a token from a block chain be unique to each individual voter? It would just represent a unique transaction (verified identity through MFA, proving eligibility to vote).

How would you prevent a voter from mining 2 tokens ?
And why couldn't that mechanism be implemented *without* the voter having to do the mining themself ?
Basically, the vast majority of legitimate voters have no idea what mining a token from a block chain is, and would need to outsource that part anyway.
Telling Grandpa that he needs to mine a token to vote, and he'll go out to the garage and grab a pick and shovel.
Blockchain could be used, but the tokens would need to be assigned to voters, there's no way they would be mining them themselves, and I can't think of any reason you'd want them to.
