Am I Protected Under LEOSA?

Good afternoon gents, I’m transferring jobs in the Marine Corps and becoming an MP (Military Police) soon. I’m just wondering when I become an MP and when I’m on leave or just visiting NY am I able to carry in NYC? I have my Suffolk permit (sportsman) but I just want to make sure everything is good to go. For the LEOSA info it states “ The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) is a federal law, enacted in 2004, that allows qualified current law enforcement officers and qualified retired law enforcement officers to carry a concealed firearm in any jurisdiction in the United States, regardless of state or local laws, with certain exceptions.” so I’m just wondering am I able to carry or no and also the local gun shops said that I’ll be able to purchase Leo only firearms in NY and that I should be exempt from unSAFE ACT. I just want another Leo or someone who knows the answer to help me out. Thanks!

There are two different questions there.

Your PMO or MCPD has the authority to issue LEOSA credentials. Whether or not they will is up to the individual PMO or MCPD.

That does not automatically exempt you from laws that restrict the possession of certain weapons or devices in New York State. You need to check NYS PL 265.20 and see if you are exempt.

For questions of your status as a super citizen and its special bill of rights, I would suggest you contact the U.S. Attorney that has jurisdiction over the area in question in particular, your MP position and how it relates specifically. They are the government and they are there to help.

Bob gave you the answer. You need the correct credentials from the Marines. Not all get it. As far as I understand it, most MP’s DON’T get it.

My command would not issue creds to anyone. Years ago, I think it was more about ignorance then anything.

I have a few friends that are currently MP's and they have received the creds needed. They are all seniors NCO's; lower enlisted are not getting them.

The MP Corps up this way wouldn’t issue creds to anyone under 10 years of MP time.
