An accidental weapon discharge at Atlanta airport caused panic and halted flights​

(CNN)The accidental discharge of a passenger's weapon in a security area of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport caused widespread panic Saturday afternoon, prompting a brief halt of departing flights over the busy travel weekend.
The passenger was going through the screening process around 1:30 p.m. when "somebody recognized that there was a weapon in the bag," airport spokesperson Andrew Gobeil told CNN's Jim Acosta.
"When either the officer went in or when the passenger went in to get it, it accidentally discharged," Gobeil said, and the loud noise created a "sense of chaos."

The alternative to accidental is intentional. I doubt this was intentional, so that means it was accidental.

It was almost certainly negligent as well.

If it fired, but you did not intend it to do so, then it was an accident. Most accidents are caused by someone pulling the trigger when the didn't mean to.

Most accidents are also negligent, because the reason the trigger got pulled is that someone wasn't exercising due care.

There are exceptions, but the above covers 95+% of the cases. They are negligent accidents.



If you hit a tree driving around a corner at twice the recommended speed limit, it is still an accident, despite your foot on the accelerator and hands on the wheel.

Sounds more reckless than accidental to me if anything else. Can't help but wonder if headlines would have characterized it much differently had perpetrator been white.

Accident vs negligent is more easily understood with a car, but the same principles apply.


If you hit a tree, and it wasn't on purpose we call it a car accident.

If it happens because you hit some black ice, or swerved to avoid a deer, then we say it wasn't negligent, because you could have been exercising reasonable care and it still happened.

If you hit the tree because you were driving 75mph around a 45mph curve, or you were drunk, then we still call it an accident, but we also say you were negligent.



Note, I find it ironic that an incident that totals a car can be caused by reckless driving (it was reckless, not wreckless LOL).

It's all semantics but "accidental" frames the event as if there were no fault of the operator (which I'm sure CNN is quite aware of) negligent on the other hand places blame where it belongs not on an inanimate object (i.e. the gun) but rather squarely on the shoulders of, in this case, the convicted felon who mishandled a loaded firearm.

I agree. I fly a few times a year, and every time I see a bag taken aside for a manual inspection, the passenger can't get to it. When they do open the bag, they do it right in front of you, so he may have gone for the gun once the TSA person opened the bag. With something that should be as clear as a gun in the xray, I would assume they would keep the bag out of reach.

A tree falls on your parked car, THAT's an accident. When someone crashes its because someone did something that caused them to lose control of the car...thus it's a crash.

I would assume if it looks like a gun they'd have called over a PO before bringing it to be checked, giving the PO a heads up. Especially when they have people watching them open the bag.

That may be your practice, but general use is unintentional = accident. What degree negligence was involved is a completely separate matter.

How about a car/deer accident ?

I hit one once, jumped out of a hedgerow and I hit it before it even touched the ground. I was alert and watching for them and still didn't even have time to hit the brakes. No way I was at fault for that at all.

But, people also hit deer that maybe with more skill or care they could have avoided. I'm not sure where you draw the line there, but it's obvious there must be some gray area. There must be some territory between perfection and negligence.

I think you are all on the wrong trail. If the idiot with the gun had been a Trump supporter, the news would be how a Domestic Terrorist was forcibly detained while attempting to commit mass murder and his deadly full semi-automatic, high capacity, exploding murder round loaded sinister black handgun discharged in the struggle.
