ALBANY -- Cynthia Nixon may have been one of the stars on HBO's hit Sex and the City, but she has a long way to go to get New Yorkers to know her and like her.

Those were the results from a Siena College poll Monday that showed the potential Democratic gubernatorial candidate as a heavy underdog in a hypothetical matchup against Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo was also a sizable favorite for a third term against the two main Republican candidates: either Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro or Syracuse Sen. John DeFrancisco, the poll found.

Among registered Democrats, Cuomo was favored 66 percent to 19 percent over Nixon, the poll showed. And among self-identified liberals, who Nixon would want to court specifically, Cuomo held a similar lead.
The National Organization for Women-New York endorsed him on Thursday, and the state Democratic Committee started running ads touting his support of gun-control measures.

The poll found voters support stronger gun-control laws.

Five years after its passage, the state's SAFE Act was supported by 61 percent of voters, Siena said, while 65 percent said they backed a ban on the sale of assault weapons nationally.

And voters opposed, 69 percent to 28 percent, allowing teachers to be licensed to carry concealed firearms in schools.

“Voters who claim to have a gun or rifle in their home – about one in five voters statewide – oppose the SAFE Act by a relatively narrow 49 percent to 42 percent," Greenberg said.

"More than two-thirds of voters in households with no gun support the SAFE Act."

The poll was conducted March 11-16 tov772 New York registered voters. It had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

“Cynthia Nixon was opposed to having a qualified lesbian become mayor of New York City. Now she wants to be an unqualified lesbian to be the governor of New York. You have to be qualified and have experience. She isn’t qualified to be the governor,” Quinn said.

Quinn conceded that she and the “Sex and the City” actress both support progressive positions — but added that it takes more than being a reliably leftist celebrity to run the Empire State.
