Anti-depressants and SAFE

So..... long story short, my father had a significant stroke this past week. Depression is common in people who have had strokes, and he's pretty depressed (starts to cry, gets upset, etc). So, they prescribed him Prozac. He won't be going home in the near future or anything. He has a lot of inpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy to go through before he gets released. He hasn't expressed any violent thoughts to himself or others. It's always possible for someone to report him anyways though.

So, what should I do? Should I just leave the guns in his house? Should I go over there this weekend and grab them? Should I wait until just before he comes home to get them? Should I even mention anything to the doctors?

Also, if anyone has had a family member go through a significant right sided stroke (left side of body affected) and wouldn't mind me bouncing some questions off them, I'd appreciate it.

Very sorry to hear that, - hope he makes a full recovery. If it were me, I'd go over right away and move the guns out, at least for the foreseeable future. Not because of anything he might do, but because of the fucking gun grabbing crap that goes on here. But my bigger concern would be any handguns. Hopefully you have them co-registered. Or they are at risk of being seized.

Might be worth it to move them out to a free state and put them in storage for now. A nice leisurely drive to PA with them in the trunk, and with everything on the car in perfect working order, of course. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Oh, - and I would say absolutely nothing to anybody about them. You have no idea where any records get shared, legally or otherwise.

You can start the process of getting the handguns on your permit now just in case. It'll only take a few weeks.

my dad had dementia and there was a point that we had to restrict access to his guns. the Doctor said Dont remove them, it may cause him to get depressed further. we were told to Lock them up but keep them in the house. put a safe in or change the combination.

my dad took it Real Hard when he wasn't allowed to Drive any more. if he lost his guns he would have gone Ape shit!

Hoping for a full and speedy recovery for your Dad. If it was me, I'd be over there cleaning every gun and anything gun related out of the house right now. If any of that stuff ever goes to the state or LEO, you'd be lucky to ever see any of it again.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. Unfortunately, the chances of a full recovery are slim to none. He has pretty much no control over the left side of his body. He has feeling, but can't move his arm, leg, or even face. Really though, he'd be happy just being able to stand up and throw a horseshoe. I think that's what he is most upset about right now. He's getting transferred to a stroke rehab facility, so hopefully they can set him on the path to recovery. He is one tough SOB though. He had the stroke Sunday afternoon or evening, laid outside all night, and wasn't found until Monday evening about 8pm.

He has no handguns (I have my permit even if he did, so adding them wouldn't be a big deal). Obviously, I'm his son, so transferring the long guns to me for the time being is no issue. I may pull them out of the house now and worry about explaining it to him once he's ready to go back home. Who knows how long he'll be on the anti-depressants for. He may be at inpatient rehab for a few months and only be on the drugs for a couple.

As far as I know, he bought them before we were even old enough to know he had them. I doubt there's any record of them, do you think there is? I think he'd understand once he's in the right mind that what you're doing is to protect him and his property. If he didn't care about SAFE before and how it affected him, he will now. IIrc, you said he didn't, so this is an eye-opener.

My neighbor, was like a father to me, had a severe stroke. Took several years, but he made it to about 90% of original.

My daughter had a massive stroke at age 16. I retired early (54) to help her get through rehab. depression etc. That was 10 years ago. She still has very limited use of her right arm. She has a Bioness electronic device to help her walk, do to drop foot. Has a type of delayed feeling in her right side. Speech is amazing considering. I'm told because she's left handed she had a better chance of talking. About your dad going into a stroke rehab facility....you'll probably find it more like a nursing home and very depressing in itself. REHAB IS VERY IMPORTANT. Keep at it and good luck.

That doesn't really matter though. All a doctor has to do is report that he's on anti-depressants and don't know how he'll act when he gets home.

I'm only wondering because I don't know what kind of records were kept in terms of gun purchasing up until a few years ago. Maybe nobody really knows if he has any? Who knows. Like you said though, it doesn't matter. Better safe than sorry, keep the state out of it.

I'm his son. I can just go to his house and take them with no transfer issues. It doesn't really matter if anybody knows I have them.


I'm going down to his house this weekend. I've got about 5 cords of wood that need to be cut, split, and stacked in the next 4 months. At the very least, I need to come up with a game plan. Maybe mark some trees, get them on the ground, etc.

Hope your Dad improves, never give up on your parents, never - unless they don't deserve it. My Mom died of complications from Alzheimer's. I firmly believe that those with bad strokes or Alzheimer's know everything that goes on around them - they just can't express their feelings verbally. It drives them crazy.

My Dad went through a similar situation after my Mom died. He never had any firearms, didn't like them.

Although it's a tricky situation, frankly, I never would have posted it here, or anywhere. PM to selected members whose advice might be helpful, although that may not even be secure.

At the present juncture, get them out of NYS - the gun Nazis may already be working on it.

For all you know, he may have been put on NY's secret "no guns" list already. No one knows until they come take the guns or you get a NICS denial. If he doesn't have a pistol permit it might break the chain of events leading to confiscation but I don't know.

I've got a bunch of friends that will help. Along with his friends and our family, we should be good. I'm thinking about throwing a range day at his place. Everyone comes and shoots guns for a few hours and then does work (firewood, filling in potholes in the driveway, etc) for a few hours, and then we eat dinner and party. I'm not too worried about getting stuff done.

Sorry to hear about your Father,my advice is to not say anything to the Dr.,go ahead and remove the firearms for the short or long term,I lost a very close family member to depression and a firearm related suicide,I would hate to see anyone else go through that!

I'd say take the ammunition because I don't think that he will be happy that you took his guns, he might think you don't trust him and he might become more depressed, watch his every move. Sorry this happened to him and you

This is a tough one Nirvana Fan and I hope it all works out for you and your dad and the rest of your family. I'll add my two cents to the matter.

I have a close relative that owns several long guns, has a pistol permit and two handguns and is on antidepressants. Has been for years. Never been to psychological counseling as far as I can tell and I suppose nothing has been reported via mental health disclosures to the state. Nothing has been confiscated...no letters or anything to that effect. This person also has not purchased any gun (pistol or long gun) for probably 20-30 years. Went on antidepressants probably about 10 years ago. Maybe that's the reason nothing has been triggered on the state level.

Their pistol permit has not been reupped with the state yet. I do worry however that the grabbers and the gun seizure goon squad could come at any moment. There's a part of me that thinks maybe the State Police are waiting until next year and all the pistol permits need to be reupped with them before starting raids. Might be waiting for confirmation and cross examination with medical/mental health records to have all their i's dotted and t's crossed to ensure favorable court case outcomes (as far as the state is concerned).

In short nothing has happened even though they are are on antidepressant medication. This is just my personal observation and may not be true for everyone. We know the stories about people voluntarily going to hospitals for things like insomnia and then getting their permits revoked so worst case scenarios can and do happen. But not necessarily always the case.
