The internet has given a mouthpiece to an unbelievable amount of stupidity that until just this century was kept substantially under wraps. Instead of many of us forming opinions after receiving semi-objective information from professional journalists on the news, we get it from assholes on facebook and twitter, and we "follow" people who agree with us, cementing confirmation bias. This plays very well to the low-brow, poorly educated proletariat.
Ironically something that has made available voluminous knowledge and history has also created gargantuan armies of useful idiots.
