Is anyone for/against the antler restrictions? I personally am against them. Not sure why they chose to put the restriction in place.

Antler restrictions do work. They been around in my neck the woods for about 12 years now.
Am for them absolutely not but I do notice that the bucks have gotten much bigger and I have been pulling much larger racks which was the whole reason behind it and the restrictions.
For meat I prefer young bucks or does. The meat is much tender.

Agreed that insofar as more buck with larger racks, they do work. But, does it encourage people to hunt who otherwise wouldn't? It seems like I heard them say that some years ago. For those who hunt for meat and not trophies, it hinders more than it helps. Maybe when there are plenty of buck with racks over the limit it won't be so bad, but some guys I know had to let perfectly good deer go because they were in the restriction area.

I remember when I started hunting over 35 yrs ago there were alot of people in the woods opening day. The hunting group I was in had about 14 guys. Myself and 3 other guys were the youngest at 16 yrs old and ages ranged right up to the 70's back than. I remember a lot of deer were bagged each year. People had them strapped all over cars and pick ups. The Thruway the Quick-way as well as the Taconic had check points everywhere.
Now we are down to 4 of the original guys plus my 17 yr old son and my friends 25 yr old son. We have plenty of lands to hunt on but no one is interested in hunting. Kids dont care for it. Too much anti-gun propaganda. Limits on what, where and when you can hunt. I cant blame for no one getting into the sport.
No one ever reported the deer takes each year and if they did it was maybe 1 out of every five or so. Now it has become mandatory. And because its mandatory they have all of these crazy new rules and regs. I and the people I hunt with haven't drawn a DMP in the area we hunt in for the last 3 years. Years back we all use to get one. Haven't seen check point in over 10 years.
Enclosed is the NY Deer Harvest History report. Looking at the report you would think what I said is all bullshit and no one ever went hunting back then.

Yup, I started hunting around the same time, but I was a bit younger. You are correct. I remember going to school and it seemed like deer grew on trees there were so many hanging. Not for a long time have I seen that. But I don't think the restrictions on rack size will help. More doe permits would be a good start, since more hunt for meat than hunt for trophies I think.
I'm against this government regulation. If I've got a buck permit, it doesn't change the population if I shoot a 2 year old, or a 5 year old. It should be up to the individual if they want to take a smaller deer.

Agreed. If they want to lower the population, you would think they could give more doe permits or allow the one of either sex for your first deer, and then buy extra tags for more.
I disagree with them on the grounds that it protects bucks with poor genetics and allows them to continue breeding. Age does not equal points technically, genetics determines that. Large, old spike deer are not uncommon, and allowing them to pass on their genes just makes things worse.

Very true. All this data used to be gathered at check points yrs back. I haven't seen a check point in over 10 yrs.

They go to the processor now and check the tags there. A kid I know got fined for not reporting a kill because DEC stopped by the butcher shop.

I used to, but don't have the time to do it by myself. Easier to pay $65 and have them call me when its' done.

I don't think so. I thought it was 24 hours. He got a $25 or $50 fine.

If he left it there for any longer than that (even the frozen meat), the DEC could have known. I've heard of them going to the butchers and getting tag #s.

Oh, so he must have had it there for a longer then. It was a couple years ago. I know he wasn't happy about them not giving him a warning.

It could purely be coincidence but since antler restrictions went in I've seen bigger bucks. Not going to lie I probably am more of a trophy hunter (none of the meat goes to waste...always make sure someone gets it). Having said that, if they really want to get populations down they need to allow people to shoot more does. There were a dozen in my field tonight, which is less than what there was when I was a kid but still a lot for this acreage.

I seen a youtube video a while back from a hunter enthusiast channel .. i think it was from Iowa .. they did the antler restriction mojo and it killed off the Doe population so bad it took years to get the bucks back .. i hunt for the sport and food .. if its brown its down and in the freezer .. if i get that opportunity for a 50 point buck sure i'll take it ,. but I'm not going out looking for it .. i don't run trail cams .. i know the deer are there .. i take whats there if i can ..

I want to do trail cams this year because I didn't see one single deer last year. Saw sign, but no live animals. It would be nice to have some idea of movements, times and numbers.

where i hunt , last year because it was so warm , they were all playing at night and early morning , i get to my spots at 5 to 6am and see all kinds of tracks in the little snow we had , but not a deer in sight after sunrise .. there off to bed .. ..

Same where I hunted. I think this year will be different. I hunt where there are no antler restrictions, so if I get a shot this year I will take it.
