WTB Anvil Wanted

There is a small railroad repair station close by, i,'l stop by when I see the guys there and pick some up. I've got other stuff from them before.
They use 1/4" rubber pads about 6" x 12".
I cut them up and cut a small piece out so my Ruger Mark 2 magaine fits through it to hold that little tab down to load it.

If your looking at anvils, take a 3/4" or 1" ball bearing with you. Drop it onto the anvil face from about 18" or so, it should bounce back up just about into your hand. Anything much less is soft, look for something else. ABout $ 1 a pound is fair price for used anvils - lot of people figure they're worth a lot more, just saying.

I did get ahold of a 1" ball bearing to test whatever I come across. I've done a lot of reading in the past week to brush up on what to look for when buying an anvil. However, many people I have contacted are asking $5-7/lb for anvils that are in rough shape so I'll be waiting until a realistic seller comes along.

If you go to Harbor Freight don't forget the save 20% coupon you see everywhere plus a small cheap free item. Them small magnetic dishes are useful.

So I picked one of the anvils up at harbor fright the other day. I found an old gift card laying around and got one for $5. Forgot the 20% off coupon though... damn it!

p.s I was given the magnetic tray as a gift a few years ago, great for the garage for sure.

At the Amherst Museum complex in north Amherst off New Road there use to be a blacksmith club, coop. They had a decent size forge and all the cool tools. Would a group like that be of interest?

You could post a "WANTED ANVIL" in the farm section on Craigs List. Some one close by you has one just sitting there that isn't getting any use.

You would think so but I’ve been sending emails and texts to Craigslist posts like you wouldn’t believe. They either have one and want an unrealistic price for the anvils condition and weight or don’t have one at all. Only one person I’ve found with fair prices that sells them and he’s currently out of them.

My advise is to save your money and buy new. Most used anvils are way overpriced and beat to piss. I laugh every time I see an anvil on craigslist for 400 + dollars that looks like it was dragged hundreds of miles behind a truck. I suggest NC tools, Centaur Forge or other farrier supply stores that may be in your area. There is a high turnover rate with farriers and you may get lucky if you find one that is changing careers and wants to unload his tools. Good luck.

Just picked up a 132lb Peter Wright anvil in pretty good condition so I’ll be set for a while. I appreciate the help everyone provided on this forum!

You picked up a big one, I think mine is about 40 pounds or so. I'll have to weigh it.i did get a 12" piece of RR rail this afternoon.I think I'll work at it like on the Youtube video that was sent in.

I haven't seen the RR guys yet for some RR rail.
