FYI, there is no sales tax on food (unprepared) in NY. Only prepared food, such as a hero or bbq chicken is taxed.

If you have bunches of hives, you can probably get some agricultural land tax rates. I only have two hives though.

I finished the electric fence and was able to throw the bees into a couple of hives. I'll get a couple more pictures tomorrow.

If you can find a nuc (small hive with 5 frames, usually), it isn't too late. You could also attempt to catch a swarm, but there is no guarantee of that. I'd suggest looking around for a beekeeping store near you. They'll be able to point you in the right direction. See if there is a beekeeping club as well. They'll be able to give you some good advice.

They're pretty gentle. You can touch them on the comb and they just crawl away. I don't mind them crawling on my hands/arms. I don't really like them crawling on my neck/face or up my shorts though. I had hundreds of them flying around yesterday. Didn't get stung once. Puff some smoke at them and they calm right down. It's nerve racking at first, but once you do it a bit, you calm right down.

Today, I went to my parents to start getting firewood for next winter. So, I had a chance to check up on the bees and took a few pictures.
The beehives are behind the electric fence. I need to do a little weed control and digging, but it will work for now. The fence puts out something like 11k volts with no resistance. I held a piece of grass and touched it to the fence. There was about 5" between my fingers and the fence and I could feel a pretty decent shock. It will give Yogi a pretty good jolt if he touches his it.
The bees were bringing in tons of pollen. I assume the yellow is mostly from the dandelion bloom that is going on. I'll give them another week, then I will open up the hive and see if I need to add a second box yet.

Just installed a nuc this weekend . I lost my hive in Jan to a fluke tree limb that snapped in a wind storm and took a tumble down the hill. It didn’t knock the hive over but separated the 2 large suppers enough to freeze em solid.
that sucks. How much did you pay for the nuc? Our club does a large group buy and they were $130 this year. 5 frames and a feeder frame.

Damn it was like $175 I ordered it back in January after I found the loss. It had 6 frames good brood and honey. I started the last one from a mail order box, it took well but figured the nuc would be better since I kinda know what I am doing now

Mine had about 3 very good frames, 1 good frame, and 1 frame they were still drawing out. Yours cost more, but it sounds like it was a stronger nuc.
I kept the feeder frame in the hives, for now. The dandelions are really starting to take off, so I'm going to pull it out and replace it with normal frames this coming weekend. I am going to throw on the second brood box as well, since I won't be able to check them for 2 weeks. Having drawn comb on frames should help them build up faster.

The new hive seems to be doing well. There building out the top box pretty good. the nuc is definitely way ahead of the package bees I got the last time.

With everything in bloom, dandelions, fruit trees, and wild flowers, the only honey bee I have seen was in my truck this afternoon, I left the window down. I made sure he found his way to freedom, unharmed.

pjzwtl, I have never seen a water jar on a hive. Is it dry in your area? Does it serve another purpose?
A friend of dh's has two hives out back. I have not been bothered at all by the bees. There are some gmo crops around but there are many in this area that are not. Hope it helps the bees.
Last year there was a swarm at sil's and she was pretty freaked. This same gentleman came and got it.

Wish I had a place to do this. I worry about the bee population decreasing. They are so important to our agriculture.
How about some details on the electric fence set up? Will that small solar panel keep the battery charged?
