So for some unknown reason (other that I wanted it) I picked up a 39-2 and am trying to figure out how old it is. I figured someone here may have a handy dandy all thing S&W auto book before I reached out to the factory for some help. Some preliminary leg work has it close to 1976, so the bicentennial thing would be cool. As a side note since you made it this far through the rambling, it’s in the original box, all original propaganda in the box and the original wax paper. Serial is A285XXX

Your 39-2 is probably late 75’ early 76’. Serial number range A265xxx - A295xxx ( 1975-1976) according to my handy dandy 4th edition Standard catalog of Smith & Wesson firearms
