Anyone buy a semi auto rifle lately?

I was at the permit office in Niagara County transferring a couple handguns to My family members and was asked if I wanted a semi auto rifle permit for 5 dollars. I asked what was that and was told NY State law now is to buy a semi auto rifle a person has to have a pistol permit and stamp or apply for a semi auto permit.which takes just about 9 to 12 months to get, as I was told. I never heard of this coming to our neighborhood. Anyone else aware of this?

The PP + stamp option? I don't think that was covered as extensively here as the standalone semi-auto rifle permit was. I don't know anyone that applied for the latter, but I also haven't heard of many buying SA rifles since this stupidity took effect.

Semi auto permit has been in effect for a while now, maybe 2 years now, years blend together now. I believe those who have pistol permit can have an amendment to PURCHASE a semi automatic rifle added to their permit to PURCHASE a semi automatic rifle but I'm not sure how someone gets that privilege without a PP.

I have had a full carry PP in NY for well over 30 years now I was told at the time of renewal and re-cert, I would have to wait 6-12 months if I wanted a semi-auto purchasing privilege, which came with finding 4 strangers to vouch for me, photo ID and a background investigation the absolute works. I said respectfully to the permitting officer "and you're just going to renew my existing full carry license I have had for over 30 years with no concerns that four strangers haven't vouched for me recently with sworn affidavits signed by a notary and then wait another 6-12 months for an FBI background check? You realize how ridiculous that sounds, don't you?" He couldn't say anything. It's Westchester and there isn't any logic to what goes on here. He may have gotten the process wrong for existing PP holders but he shouldn't. You rarely get a straight or correct answer from Westchester County. Probably because it all made up as they go along. :ROFL: :flag: :beer:

How does a gun owner in NY not know about this?

I didn’t ask for it but the county added it when I put in an amendment for a new handgun. No paperwork to fill out or wait time.

I bought a used Marlin 60 when I was in NY in April with no issues. Well, except you need special permission to buy a .22.

In Westchester, the semi-auto rifle endorsement is added to your firearms license. You submit an amendment with one extra notarized document (forgot which). I waited 3-4 months for mine to be approved. They never mailed it to me, so I only found out it was approved 5 months after submitting it. I bought a pistol and decided to drop off the amendment in person so I could ask them what's up with the semi-auto endorsement.

I added a pistol to my permit within weeks of the SA crap going into effect. The county clerk added it to my pistol license without asking me, or me asking her to do it, nor did she charge me $any. I love my county. (Warren)

I need to update my license anyway, so I might as well add this.

I don't think Dutchess even asks for anything. Imperati is pretty good about that. It's just a box you "check" for semi-auto rifles being added when you update the license. Doesn't say shit about giving more references. It's a $13 transaction afaik to get it added.

Onondaga county asks if you want it when you amend your permit. ( at least they used to when it was first enacted) I had to amend my permit to add another pistol and the clerk asked me if I wanted it added then ( at no charge) but I told her no, I won’t be participating in the new bullshit law. She just chuckled and went off to amend my permit.

You could look at this another way.....some gun owners in NY are not politically involved or at least aware of the political shenanigans being pulled by their representatives.

You can't rely upon the media to inform you.....you have to get your head out of the sand and pay attention.

Decades to late. I was warning people MANY decades ago about the 60`s hippies taking over one day. People wouldn`t listen back then any more than they are right now, and here we are. The gun culture is its own worst enemy. The majority of people are to dumb to know when its raining that they`re gonna get wet. "huhhh? what`s a rain coat?"

My wife and I had it added to our permits at least 18 months ago. Didn’t cost anything to do it. I was adding a pistol and the permit clerk just asked if we wanted it added. What is really stupid is that it only applies to semi auto rifles and not semi auto shotguns.

State law now. That and 21 is the minimum age. Welcome the the state of over-reacting and oppression

SA Rifle was added to my PP about a year ago when I moved from Oswego Co. to Onondaga Co. I remember the fat ass cop behind the counter asking if I wanted it and I said sure... why not. I was a bit surprised he asked me because he was acting like moving his fat ass around to do his job was a major inconvenience. Folks at Oswego Co. were all very nice, big difference. Anyways, I don't remember if there was an added charge or not, maybe a few bucks.

Yeah, that kind of pissed me off that it didn’t affect the SA clay shooters!
I get sick and tired of hearing at the gun club “ well that doesn’t affect me so what do I care”
