Anyone buy a semi auto rifle lately?

So in Dutchess this is apparently very run-of-the-mill. I double-checked this morning with the pistol permit office. It's just a checkbox and a $13 fee for processing and a new card to be mailed. That's it.

No four people signing on your behalf, no year-long wait. $13, and they view it like adding another pistol to your license — just a basic background check before they add it on and give you a new card the next week.

In case anyone in the area is wondering.

Putnam was just an add to your pp for 5 bucks or they will add it when you buy a pistol and have to get a new card for the same 5 bucks.

The serialized gun doesn't go on your license afaik anyway, it's just a blanket endorsement to purchase. Dutchess basically treats it like the clown show it is and just tacks it onto your license or can during any amendment.

I'd just get it added. The serials aren't tracked. It's just an OK for an FFL to sell you a new SA.

This is the first I'm hearing of a Semi-Auto Rifle Card being issues and the process for doing so...I really need to get to the Jefferson and bordering County Offices to see what and if they're doing anything other than adding an endorsement.

NY will use this, as they use any excuse, the shit all over your 2A rights... out of necessity! You already need permission to purchase one, next will be the old "need" to be explained. Then registration, ooooops, they already do that. Don't worry... It'll come real quick, you won't have to wait too long for whatever new hurdles and hijinx they come up with for you to jump over or do in order to exercise what is God given, not theirs to dispense!

Don't mind me, I'm a cynic, have always been, and will always be!

And NY's treatment to residents and the habitual malfeasance displayed by the ruling elite here was a primary contributor to me vacating this State!

I'd love to know the answer to this question. Because I don't have a pistol permit or own any pistols, obviously... but I have dozens of semi-auto rifles (purchased before the dumb SA rifle permit law). I don't yet own any bolt action rifles, but I planned to buy an "AR-Style" complete bolt action rifle sooner or later.

Now I'm wondering if I would need a rifle permit to buy one. Although, I could simply buy a bolt action complete upper and use one of the lowers I already own with it, I suppose. What a mess NY gun laws have become. I feel bad for my buddies who don't own any guns yet, and want to get into the sport. So many hoops to jump through that they're just not interested enough to figure it all out -- which is exactly what the tyrants want.

My observation as a newcomer to the state is that by and large, folks have a cultural aversion to challenging authority. That fealty seems just incredibly embedded in the culture in NY and the northeast in general. This is why you have to pay a nickel per shopping bag, gas heat is going the way of the dodo bird, and why you have tolls on a major east-west interstate. It’s pretty anti-social to be any other way.

It’s also why I don’t fit in particularly well up there. NY is my third state I’ve lived in and is by far the most vastly different place I’ve been. Honestly the northeast feels like a different nation altogether.

I've also lived in a few other states, southern states, and I agree. The vast majority in NY don't seem to care about their rights being taken away. Also, too many listen to mainstream liberal BS, and it's sadly brainwashed and conditioned them to be NPC's.

So it would depend on the store. Could they sell you a stripped lower if you pinky swear to make it a bolt action? Yes. Same way they could sell you a lower before and you would have to pinky swear to build it into a NY compliant rifle. Some will. Others don't want to risk the chance that you build it into a semi-auto and it somehow gets back to the state that they didn't transfer the lower as a semi-auto rifle. They could lose their state dealer's license if something like that were to blow back at them.

Agree. Plus the subjective law placing liability on the dealer. Most of my questions asked regarding the subjectivity of the new laws have gotten the same response “You need to have a lawyer and make your own decision. But the liability falls on you.” Thanks very helpful….
