Anyone ever tinker with red-dot reflex type sights on handgun?

Are they durable, worthy of field service conditions or an overpriced novelty? Can they be slide mounded or do I need a special side frame mount? How are they under full sun conditions? How about manufacturers, Leupold, Vortex, Trijicon?

Have a Burris Fastfire 3 on my 7.5" Smith 29. With a two hand hold, rested on a table, or tree, it easily breaks clay pigeons placed on the embankment at 100 yds without much trouble. This is with the 3MOA dot version, which is what I would suggest if anything over 50 yards will be involved.. If your pistol is a S&W, a fellow makes a nice low-profile mount that couldn't be more friendly to use. Forget his name, but he's on the S&W forum. Got one, and it screwed right into the factory holes in the pistol (w/a little blue Loctite). Couldn't have been a smoother install, and after many rounds and use in both cold or hot days, the dot is plenty bright and it never lost its zero, even with stiff hunting handloads. My new deer rifle..

+1 on the Burris. The FF3 has 4 intensity settings - high, medium, and low plus one that adjusts to ambient light. You can turn it on to the ambient setting, holster the gun under your shirt or whatever, and forget about it for the next 7 hours or so. (Burris says 8 hours to the automatic shutoff but it's more like 7). When you draw the gun the dot will be there.

Take a long look and think about how big of a dot you want. I got the bigger one (8 MOA maybe? don't recall right now). Keep in mind that once it is sighted in the POI will always be in the center of the dot, no matter how big the dot is. The only real issues with dot size are how much of the target it will obscure and how quickly your eye can acquire it.

And for my purposes with this dot I want a big ole ball of fire that my eyes can pick up fast. (See what I did there? lol) While I would have a blast busting clay birds at 100 yards, that's not what my G26 is for. I have other guns with other dots for that kind of shooting.

Oh, one more thing............. blue Loctite is your friend.

And one more thing........... if you go with the Burris it does come with a sunshade - which you will probably never need. So don't put it on unless your really really want it on. Cuz it's a bitch to get off.

I had a fast fire 2 on my open glock for a couple of years. Held up fine even shooting major loads. Switched to c more on a mount. Fast fire dot wasnt that bright. Plus the c more looked cooler. Thinking of switching back to a slide mounted dot. I think they are more accurate. Probably due to the plastic frame.

House gun and carry, travel gun for truck, hotel. As more items are added to gun they get too big, heavy for full time concealed carry. As a bedside traveling companion yes.

If it's for actual use use I personally say trijicon I hear the delta point pro is also a good choice (ie gabe suarez who only actually suggests 2 maybe 3 red dots, the 2 mentioned before and maybe 1 or 2 others, Burris ff is not one of them)

Nothing wrong with the Burris if it's a range toy or competition. But it does have an auto off after like 8 hours or some shit, and crap for battery life. I have one will not use it for serious carry. Trijicon RMR has something like 2 years constantly on battery life.

Next as for the milling vs a mount. Personally always go with milling, might cause a little more in the long run but it's more secure and better Point if aim Point of impact as it's closer to the bore of the gun, not to mention I have only seen 2 mounts that give the option for a cowitness back up iron sights which if it's a carry gun should be a priority but they are about the same cost as getting a slide milled (speaking glock or m&p mostly) then you have the added cost of suppressor height sights. Again milling will cost a little bit more but if you don't like the red dot you can always just put a cover over it and no harm no foul (depending on the gun)
