Is it worth the extra $100 more for the side focus? I read they break a lot and your better off just getting the rear focus?
I've had the 10x42 SS with the side focus for several years.
It's a great scope and I've never had any problems with the side focus or any other part of the scope for that matter.
IMO, a side focus is knob much easier to manipulate while looking through the scope than a rear tube focus.

My thoughts are less moving parts with heavy recoil would be better for it. Like fixed magnification.

Mine is rear focus, I don't think side is worth $100 more to me, but that's going to depend a lot on how much you want to spend and how much you spend time refocusing.
I use mine mostly at fixed distances, so refocusing isn't frequent.

Having both the fixed and the variable...I have to say I really prefer the variable. The variables are very stout as well. Unless you're just using the intended rifle for known targets at a fixed distance, I would go for the variable if you can.
They both often go on sale around the 4th of July. Usually $199 (fixed) or $499(variable).
I have a set of zero stop shims for both. I think they were like $20 on ebay. Totally worth it for any dynamic environment. Just make sure you don't abosultely smash the turrets into the stop, but gently go until you feel the resistance.
