Anyone have experience with the Ruger American Ranch Rifle?

I'm considering a bolt action rifle in 5.56, to be used simply for putting holes in paper at 100 or 150 yards. Was wondering if anyone owned a Ruger American and what their thoughts were on it.

Not in that caliber but my uncle has the Ruger American Rifle in .308 and loves it.

I have the Ruger American Ranch in 300 BLK. It is a good light weight gun. The stock is a little short for me but it is a fun gun to shoot.

I have a Ruger American (standard model) in .308. My first bolt gun. I probably have a lot more fun shooting that gun than I should.

I have one in 308, like it but as said above, the stock leaves something to be desired. I put on an after market cheek pad.

Is there a reason you chose the ranch varient? I'm just curious.

It seems to me that if you want the most out of the Ruger American as a range gun you'll want the longer barrel and an aftermarket stock.

You may end up paying more for the ranch features that you won't need at the range.

I strongly considered the a Standard Ruger American as the base to build my Varmint 223. I ended up choosing the Savage Axis 2 XP. But, the Ruger American 308 is my deer rifle. I plastic stock is light and ideal for hunting. The Ruger American is for hunting. My 308 barrel heats up fearcely after about 30 rounds. I have no doubt the 556 ranch has the same affliction. I would have opted more a heavy barreled rifle if I meant to only shout at the gun range.

In the end, you will probably love the rifle.

They are really light guns, great for hauling around all day in the woods or for junior shooters.
