Wow I wish. We could fill that thing up easily in the event of a coming disaster.

At home I'd be able to price gouge. Not so much at the station if he wants to stay in business. Lol

An alternate fuel option is to buy a gas generator conversion kit to use propane/natural gas. Not terribly expensive when you consider the alternatives (everyone looking for gas that will have a shelf life/ degrade over time) and that a barbecue tank of propane can be stored pretty much indefinitely. Waiting for these to go on sale - typically this company does a 50% off once or twice a year currently about $250 all in (conversion kit, adapters, hoses).

This is the top question. The simplest answer is that the generators typically use about the same amount of propane(92,000 btu) as they do gasoline; gallon to gallon. For natural gas one therm (100,000 btu) is about one gallon of gasoline (110,000 btu). The biggest mistake most "experts" make in opinionating that a propane or natural gas generator will lose power is based solely on these figures and not on any data they personally have. When figuring power output of any fuel, the size of the engine has to be a significant factor of the equation. For instance, comparing a vehicle with a V8 engine to a generator with an 11hp generator attached can not be calculated the same. This topic is covered in detail on the Fuel Consumption page. Propane conversions are great, never need to worry about gas going bad and gunking everything up. Getting really popular for rock crawling seems there isn't a fuel bowl holding gas to run out in extreme angles.
I'll stay with my old diesel. When everyone has siphoned all the gas from the neighborhood cars and there's none left I'll be draining the oil and tranny fluid
It wouldn't be hard to have a pretty big stock pile of propane tanks though and I've never heard anything about it going bad like gasoline.

During Sandy, I never lost power. I had some gas for the generator just in case. One month later, we lost power in the October snowstorm. Generator wouldn't run. I have alternative heat in my house so I wasn't worried about it. Finally got it going about 2 hours before power came back. After Sandy, most of the gas stations in the area were running out as soon as the truck arrived because we're right off the Thruway and one of the first places with power.

After these experiences, I did the propane conversion. Mine is a little 5K portable but runs what I need it to. It will run on either gasoline or propane. I have 2-100# cylinders full just for the generator, separate from my house supply of a 250 gallon tank. I can take the generator to other locations and run it off a 20# BBQ tank if I need to.
