April PRS Match

Trying to find land to buy. Was speaking with a few farmers in Orange and Delaware County, but it all fell through. Olean was the first place I got a good hit on.

You get better with practice. I'll shoot my stages after set up, but I won't for score, don't want an unfair advantage.

But it will give NY shooters a chance to try PRS without committing to as 2-Day Match 2-3 States away, while giving NY, PA, NJ, CT, and maybe Canadian PRS Shooters a chance to practice for 2-Day Matches

I do host my own matches. I have been hosting matches for over 5 years.

I began hosting my own matches casue i did not like the assholes like you and your stupid rules.

I shoot PRS and DMR matches in other atates cause most of the match directors in NY are dicks, just as you have again proven, yet again.

I'm sure it was addressed to me as one of the parties. I have been speaking with the PRS for over a year now about what they expect from a Match Director for 1-Day Club Matches. I have over $6000 invested in steel, $3000 in barricades, $3000 in spotting scopes, $1500 in timing and scoring electronics, and the permission from the PRS to advertise my matches as PRS Points Matches. I don't expect to make my money back for 2 years, especially after I buy a trailer to haul everything up there and back. So to have someone who has no idea about the PRS or that claims to be a Match Director that uses big boy rules claim that it's not a PRS Match, when it's actually listed as a PRS Points Match on the PRS Website, I guess I felt I had to clear the air.

And waht are you talking about saving people a drive to another state for multi day matches? Your match is 5 hours from me. It would have been better as a multi day match. I can get to lots of free states with better rules in 5 hours.

Oh! And i never said i run PRS matches. Only that i am a match director and understand the challenge running matches in ny......i just do it without alienating shooters.

Buddy, he did call it a bolt-gun match. You even quoted him stating as much on his own website: "This match is Bolt Action only, to prevent any violations of the NY SAFE Act. No more than 10 round magazines."

The SAFE Act is relevant for NY shooters and for visiting shooters, whether we like it or not. In the same way that when PRS or other competitions are held in Canada, shooters have to abide by Canadian rules. I really don't understand why you're making such a big stink of this.

Then don't go. There are plenty of long range shooters in NY who want these kinds of competitions. He didn't say anything provocative; you jumped down his throat for an explanatory statement posted on his website.

This is why these kinds of forums, despite having so much potential for organizing the firearm community, end up turning into bickering cesspools.

Most of Pennsylvania has easier access to this match than me. Maybe a good starting point to see what kind of interest you get, but I'd like to see Two-Days in the future.

I plan on doing 2-Day Matches in the future. I work mandatory weekends at my job, so I'm burning vacation days to do this. My ultimate goal is to buy some land and put a permanent training facility. For a 2-Day Match I'd want 1000 yards also. Things are in the works, I've spoken with farmers, forestry land owners, even tried to get an old motocross track to rent for a 2-Day Match, that I could rent the property seasonally, so I can set up and leave things set up. Right now I am setting up and breaking down, along with driving 6.5 hours each way to get there. If I can get 50-60 people signed up at each of these matches this year and next, I will buy the land and build the facility with some bunk houses for people traveling far to get there. Hopefully by late 2019 there will be a 2-Day Match in NY.

And for the record, I am a cop, I don't want anyone to make me do my job when I'm trying to unwind, and I certainly won't ask another cop to not do his job when he is on duty.

How many arrests are usually made at these matches? With bolt guns only I can only assume all the busts you and deputy “On Doody” make are for mags over 10 rounds. Sounds like a real uptight gathering.

I think your best bet is to network with as many long-range and PRS-type groups as possible within NY, NJ, VT, OH and PA. Curt Drewel is the only contact I can think of for western NY, but I'm sure there are other people to coordinate with from elsewhere.

It certainly doesn't hurt to advertise on websites like these, but unfortunately these sites tend to attract the naysayers and armchair generals. I don't know if you're going to get 50-60 people for each of these matches, but more you network, the more people you're likely to bring in.

NY is in dire need of a permanent long range facility. I heard of one that was recently set up in the Catskills region, but the pricing seems pretty bonkers. Curt Drewel I think leases land for his long range courses, but the range is only available for the actual course. I've told him before that if he were to set up a permanent range, I would be among the first to sign up for it.

Upstate43, thanks I'm looking up Curt Drewel today. I looked into leasing land, and still looking, but for now I've got the use of Olean Rod and Gun Club. I currently have 32 shooters registered which is pretty good for the first time out. I'm hoping to do a good enough job that word of mouth will get the other matches filled.

I've never gone on forums before, didn't realize there were experts that know everything, claim to be able to do things better but haven't done it yet. But I guess I should have expected it.

Yeah, I'm not picking on those guys out in the Catskills. I'm sure there is a lot of work, and money, that goes into something like that, and they need a return on that investment. I do think asking for $300 per year on top of $20 per hour of range use is a bit much for the average shooter. Though, if I were located in that area of NY, I would still heavily consider signing up for their range simply because there aren't many other long-range options.

That's good to hear that you already have 32 shooters signed up! I'd definitely like to attend one of the follow-up matches.

Just found this forum. Just getting into long distance shooting and was wondering is the PRS match down in Olean good for beginners or are they more torward experienced shooters? I'm interested In getting my feet wet into the sport more but as you all know NY is tough.

If it's not to far away and you have the necessary gear to shoot the match, sign up.
Let them know it's your fist match and to place you in the middle, so you can watch other shooters and see how it's done before you shoot.

If needed, I'm sure there will be other shooters there to lend you a hand.

It sounds like a good match to get your feet wet. Single day match with targets only out to 600yds.

There is legit 4 questions on there that you answer (anonymously and can even be hypothetical) and at the end it tells you if the gun is legal in the state or not....

You and your compadre's need to give it a rest. Many semi-auto rifles, as configured out of state, are not SAFE Act compliant.

It's a logical requirement, and even if you don't agree it's not your call. There are plenty of long range events that are bolt action only.

I have no doubt that this event, and similar ones, will bring in out-of-state shooters. Long range shooting is a growing sport and people are always looking for new venues.

If you don't like the match rules, then don't attend the match...it's that simple. I don't see why you and Bullet Guy keep making these childish comments.

I'd wager that most semi-auto rifles owned by competitive out-of-state shooters are NOT SAFE Act compliant simply because the owners have no reason to comply with such regulations. Excluding semi-auto's allows both the match director and non-residents (who are likely unfamiliar with NY's laws) to avoid unnecessary hassles.

Also, a lot of long range matches are bolt-only even regardless of local/state regulations.

Let's stop the irrelevant nit-picking and let interested parties use this thread to coordinate and get information on the match.

because it's a Club Match, other shooters can help you out while you're shooting, so yes, it's good for beginners.

Thank you, but I'm done addressing this line of criticism, like you said, don't like the rules, don't sign up. The reason the NY SAFE Act was mentioned was because at last year's matches, when spoke about having something in NY, that was the first question.
