So here's the deal. I have another lower laying around getting lonely and it's time to get another build started.

As of now I have an ar pistol in 5.56 with a 10.5" barrel. I recently took advantage of a Bear Creek Arsonal sale and picked up a 14.5" barrel in 223 Wylde with a 1/8 twist rate. I am going to perm attach an extended flash hider to avoid having to put this on permit also.

Now the pistol has a red dot on it, and my original plan was to build this 14.5 in 5.56 with some kind of magnified optic to reach out a bit farther than the pistol.

After looking at some reviews I got to thinking that I might want to go with a cmmg 22 conversion. It gets respectable accuracy from 1/8 twist for plinking while being able to practice cheaply with the ar platform.

Keep in mind, this is a fixed mag, so I have to pick one or the other. And also note that at the moment I don't have any other .22 rifle. What would you guys do? Another 556 for longer range, or a 22 ar plinker for fun and cheap shooting.

Yeah, on the 10.5 I picked up a compmag to avoid toploading altogether. If I do 556 I'll probably pick up another one.

No votes for 22 yet, so looking like another 5.56 build lol.

I was planning on getting a Midwest industries mlok rail and while searching found this. American made, and save me a boat load of dollars, so I ordered it along with a stripped upper.

What I meant was a little easier and more effective longer range than the 10.5 with red dot lol. I look at the pistol as a 100 yard and under gun. (Realistically 50 effective yards with m193 and my aging eyes)

The second reason is I sold off a handful of guns to pretty much stick with 9mm and 556. Don't want to stock up on different calibers anymore.

These are about the best free floated handguards you'll find for the money that aren't Chinese junk. I just ordered mine, and received them and a stripped upper in two days.

I did buy a 223 Wylde with 1/8 twist because I was undecided which way to go. The reason for the poll was to make a final decision because the mag will be fixed.

All parts are ordered, 223/556 it is, with a 10/22 later in the future.

Half the parts are in, the other half next week. I'm very happy with the mlok rail for $50 it can't be beat. Very slim and light. Coloration is just a tad off, but can't complain for the price.

Sticking with the low cost of this build, I went to Cabela's cause I had a $50 gift certificate so ended up paying $150 for their brand of 1x6 scope. Lit reticle and bullet drop compensation to 700 yards. Rumor is vortex makes these for Cabela's.

Thanks!! Length and profile don’t matter much because it’s gonna get chopped and crowned for a straight pull pistol build. Just need a cheap barrel I don’t mind cutting on!

No need for gas at all, it’s going to be a bolt action only. Full manual actuation, probably side charge.

No anti rotation, but reviews I have seen, nobody has had any problem. It's a non indexing barrel nut which is nice. For the price, these are my new go to.

Especially when it costs $45 for a free floated set. I see no reason to get anything else unless it's for duty use maybe.

Thank you! Sorry for the brief hijack; I have a billet upper that I'm looking to finish out without spending a ton on a handguard that isn't a standard quad and that doesn't break the bank, without tabs. Will likely order one of these up this week.

And of course being billet it won't work with anything with tabs.
